i just noticed that the 29 i'm setting up is an O'Dell, manufactured in 4Q 1974

It doesn't leak, and looks fine... sooo.....

I would think that if the metal is not in the tank then it would hold salt water just fine. The real issue is you will have salt creep and that will, not maybe but will get on the metal part of the tank. Now, if that salt or salt water with metal corrosion gets into the water it could cause contamination with things you don't want in your tank or cause an algae bloom.
Second, it could weaken the tank and cause a failure. For as cheap as 20 gallon tanks are I would think a new one or a used all glass/plastic one would be good insurance. If the metal is completly coated in plastic then you still would need to watch for corosion because there could be a hole or crack in the coating on the metal.

Hope that helped.

Use rustoleum on the metal parts (whereever that info was givin). I'd just buy another tank. 30 bucks or so is pretty cheap insurance.

no, no....

it's not metal-framed (though i had one of those once.. it has a slate bottom, weighs about 50 lbs)

it's all-glass, with the usual black plastic rim and base.

it seems to be a slightly different size than AGA or other 'modern' 29s

the bottom glass is pebbly on the inside, not clear. no mention of tempering, but i'd guess so.

this tank is up and running, no problems. i used it in a dorm room for a few years, but never noticed the sticker on the bottom before.

i'm guessing it was bought by my dad, it's probably the 29 from the corner of the dining room in my childhood home... it had cichlids in it then.

O'Dell from '74??

914, you've gotta step it up and join the modern world!!! My O'Dell is from the 80's!!! They've stepped it up and started putting faux wood finish on the trim. It's relaxing to look at while I'm wearing my parachute pants and watching Miami Vice.

Actually it's my sump. But I used to watch Miami Vice...and unfortunately I had parachute pants...
