I built my own stand and canopy from 3/4" oak cabinetry graded plywood and it worked out great!
For water proofing you can do a few different things. I used spray latex paint and it has not let me down yet. I'v also heard people saying they epoxy the inside of their hoods and top surface of the stand.
Another good suggestion I got was to spread clear silicone on the top of the stand and on the rails that will hold the canopy on the tanks edges.
I didn't do the silicone on my stand but I did add it to the canopy rails and I like the added protection from the salt creep.
If you build your own stand, be sure to use the right type of wood screws. normal cabinetry screws will rust in a hurry. I used coated decking screws.
here's a pic of my stand. tanks a 55g
Hope This Helps

Hey Spikehs,
I recently built a hood out of pine and birch ply, with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of marine paint.
Depends if you want a stained wood look, or a painted style.
Do not use particle board or MDF. Medex would work fine. I use that for outdoor porch trim.

Depending on your budget any hardwood will work. Oak, maple, walnut, ect, as long as you seal it well. Both inside and out.

The hood for my 15 gal is cabinet grade oak ply with solid oak trim.

The fascade and hood of my 100 gal goldfish tank is cedar over a poplar frame. I left it unfinished because of the look. Also It won't ever hold weight, since the tank is on a metal stand. And the cedar makes my house smell great!

Thanks guys

the responses were great, I think i am leaning towards using pine, i never thought of using special screws, so thatnks for the head up! i can just picture it...6 months from now the hood crashing down onto the tank! I was thinking of using ply-wood as well, cause we have a lot of this stuff lying around...aside from its crappy apperance is there any reason i should stay away from this stuff?..

As long as it's not pressure treated ply you should be fine. But if your buying it, consider the cabinetry grade. It's vaneered on one side and costs very closely with the regular ply.
I made a stand for a friend with 6-ply plain like your refering to and it works fine. I used it because he wanted laminate covering over the outside. His has been in use for a year with no problems.
good luck.

Pine is good as well. You can stain it any color you like. Plus it is cheap and has a good look to the grain.
