Yes, clams can move themselves. You don't list your light's so I can't say if it will receive enough light on the sand. Try a new spot on the rocks. You'll know it's happy when it stops jumping. FWIW, I have two maxi's on the sand in my tank doing fine.

I have a new Maxima that I put on a rock 1/2 up in the water column. I was told they do not like to be on the sand, but every morning I find him on the sand in front of the rock i put him on. Is he moving on his own? Is he getting knocked over possibly (current, fish, etc.)? Should I leave him alone to find his own spot? I know the more I handle him the worse it is, so what should I do???

They will move on their own if they don't like where their at. You probably have too much flow in the area your put him. If you feel you have enough light at the bottom of your tank try placing a cupped shape rock in the sand and placing the clam on that.......

Yes clams can walk... make sure it gets enough light.

clams are mollusks so they are somewhat related to snails believe it or not.. so they have a "foot" like a snail... mollusk evolved in different ways.... like squids and octopi have evolved differently from the nautilus etc etc....

Thanks
Alex

I have four clams and two like it where I put them and two don't. I am to the point where I am going to let them do their own thing as long as they are opening up well. Today, three are in the rock work and one is on the bottom...

Thanks for the infor. I will let the clam go where he may. He is under 3 400W MH, so I don't think that lighting is an issue.
