I have kept the following clowns without an anenome Clarkis, false perculas, tomatoes, and maroon.

It is very easy to find tank raised clowns which are well worth the money because they are very disease resistant and less agressive towards other clowns.

if you want more than one clown fish in your tank then tank raised is the only way to go. I have kept 6 tank raised clowns of 3 different species in my 37 at once before switching over to a reef.

Maroon clowns can only be kept singlely or as a mated pair. do not try to add two maroons or combine a maroon with any other clown or a fight to the death will ensue

Rich,

I recently added a second Maroon to my tank. It went perfectly. The second one was MUCH smaller than my original one. It has been almost 2 weeks, and not so much as a torn fin. It isn't impossible, but I am certain that I have gotten lucky.

Carolina,

Tomato's are very easy to keep. They certainly do not require an anemone. However, If you think the tomato clown is that interesting, you should see one in a host anemone. Absolutely amazing!

I have a tomato in a 55 FO for almost 8 years now without a host. She was a nasty girl when I got her and she is still nasty today. It doesn't matter because I still love her.

I can't say for sure, but I would have to say she was wild caught. If I was going to buy one today, I would buy a tank raised tomato.

If you are interested in clowns, check out Joyce Wilkerson's Clownfishes. I bought mine at half.com for about $24. Amazon also carries the book. She gives a lot of background information about clown species and their host anemones, as well as tips on how to mate pairs.

Might be a dumb question... but is there a way that i can determine the sex of my clownfish? I have a tomato clown. I was planning on getting another one and was wonder if the two would clash if they were of the same sex?

How big is your tank again?

Clown fish changes sex. they started out as male, and when they grows, changes sex to female. Only one in a group will change to female, and the rest of them would stay as male. Female of same specie will fight. Aggressiveness of female vary from specie to species. Get the above mentioned book, I dearly recommend it.
