Ouch, $50 bucks is somewhat steep, though I would expect you are paying some of the shipping cost on that. We retail that bottle for $39.95, Premium Aquatics has it for $39.99 but you would have to pay at least $10 bucks in shipping usually so there isn't much of an advantage to mail order.

That said, I have seen a few attempts at cultured live phyto but none have been able to market as effectively as Dennis has and I don't even remember who they are anymore.

I have always wondered if the by-products produced by caulerpa would have a similar result to phytoplankton. Mabey you could have an awesome system with caulerpa filtering the water and also greening the water, and then have clams eating the by-products of the caulerpa and also filtering out the nitrates.

You *really* need to look into growing your own. Its' not a big bother, you don't need a lab in your basement, and it is much less expensive than the prices quoted above.
Florida aqua farms is the company I got my cultures from.

I'm wondering if there is anything else on the market that is equal to or better than DT's LIVE Marine Phytoplankton. I know there are several "non-living" varieties of phytoplankton out there.

DT's is great stuff but very expensive. $50 for a 30 oz. bottle in my area. I wish there were a few more competitors out there that offered similar products. That would possibly drive the price down to something that is a little easier to explain to the wife

Anything else out there that you know of?????

Thanks,

There's an intriguing article in Marine Fish and Reef USA 2002 by Craig Bingman. I would highly recommend buying that magazine each year when it comes out. I have the last 2 as well as current issues. Anyway, the article, "Hydrogen Peroxide/UV Light Reactor" is about a new concept (not yet perfected) for creating a living phytoplankton "refugium" to continuously feed the aquarium and to consume organic waste at the same time. It doesn't help yet, but I plan to keep a look out for progress on this idea as it or some variant of it would be a great advance in reef keeping.
