Just out of curiosity...How many of us reefers are also divers? I've been certified over 2 years and absolutely love it as much as I love my tanks.

I'm certified, I used to live in the Bahamas for a while and had a reef right outside my front door. It was great. Unfortunately some of the natives there dive for lobster and use bleach to drive them out. It works great for driving them out, but it destroys the reef. The last time I was there some of the places we used to dive were completly dead. People don't understand that they can make more money from a living reef through tourist than they can make from lobsters in the long run.

I've got 35 dives and a large majority were off Florida coast (imagine that) Mostly in Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach area. I dove in Jamaica and was surprised at how much loss in fish life there was due to overfishing. Fish are plentiful in Florida waters and the drift dives over the reefs are great. I look forward to paying better attention the the reef life on my future dives. With the money I'm spending on my tanks it limits my dive budget significantly.

Been PADI since 1989. Loved Cozumel drift diving, (personally liked it better than Hawii). We went diving in West Indies which was cool , but hard time topping good ole Cozumel. Went every year until we had kids! It's been 4 years since I've been.........hmmmm..let's see, I've had a saltwater tank for about 4 years too ...... .hmmmm....

I've been certified for two years with around twenty dives, AOW, and a couple specialties. I've had a blast in the New River. I've only been diving in Florida once. I'm planning on trying some nice locations once I get out of school. I could have taken a couple nice dive trips down south, but I like the idea of having a reef in my room. I just got my 250W MH for my 40g breeder tank. I'm shopping for LR now. Any suggestions?

We snorkel, does that count?

We love to snorkel when we camp in northern FL. Snorkelled in Tampa last weekend.

Would like to try diving...but not sure how my ears would react...they pop going up an escaltor!

I have been a certified dive instructor for almost ten years, but I do not teach classes. The insurance is too much and I mainly got the instructor for cheaper gear.
I also love Cozumel, matter of fact I am getting married there in February, on the beach with the sunset as a backdrop! I loved diving so much that I use the aquariums I have like smokers use the patch, for when I can't be underwater.

I'm the same way Jaws. I don't think you'd have a problem Jenn. If you had trouble popping your ears then that would be a problem. I thought snorkling was great until I dove. Now I don't carry my snorkle anymore. (don't give me a hard time bubbleheads)

I have been certified since I was 13, now 28, so 15 years. I am in the Keys or off of Miami once or twice a month. However, the Cayman Islands are my favorite (going back at the end of this month for my Honeymoon)...

I'm an instructor. Over a thousand dives in the Sea of Cortez and hundreds elsewhere. I mostly just certify friends and other researchers from the University of Arizona now.

I have snorkled a little. However we are going to be spending a week in Key West in April of 2002. Anyone have any suggestions for the area? I don't know how much time we will have but I know we want to go do at least some more snorkeling...what little time we will have we don't want to waste.

Diane, try John Pennecamp State Park in the upper keys (1-1/2 hrs. from KW)They have a really cool statue of Jesus planted in the reef, many people get married underwater there. If you are in Key West, most boats will take you to Sand Key dirt cheap. Be very careful at Sand Key, as there is only 18" of water between the reef and the sky in many spots. This makes one want to stand up, resist the temptation and stay in deeper water.

I was certified when I was 15, then didn't have much time for it, and got NAUI certified for my honeymoon, and then got PADI advanced (how is that for a run on). Dove in California, Hawaii, Cozumel, Cayman, Cabo Pulmo, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz (Baja), Thailand - ROCKED -, near Chinchorro banks, going to Jamace on a gig soon, and planning Paupa New Guinea.

Best thing ever seen: Two Whale Sharks on the same dive.
What about you guys?

No other YMCA certified divers out there? I've been diving 2 years now, almost. Most of my dives have been in the Carribean, the Rhone, indians, twin towers, and many walls in the area. Most dives were off the wall in front of Jost Van Dyke.
