I have a green with pink tips and green with purple tips.
The green is doing pretty nicely on bottom of my tank , pretty much directly below my 400 watt 6500k halide with vho actinics.
My purple tip was 2 1/2 weeks old and slowly opening more and more under 'filtered' lighting (filtered from an above table acro). No sign of ill health, but seemed to stop opening more. It was maybe 1/3 from full opened at it's peak time of the day to be open. So I moved it next to the green one. I dont think that move would be normally too much of a change of light (it was pretty much the 'next level up' of lighting). After only 60 mins, it showed SERIOUS decline. It was getting kinda foamy and not open, except for little very bad looking tentacles. It was getting what my other elegans had gotten before. I put it under as close to pure actinic light that I could get in the tank right after I saw this decline. It's been a little more than 24 hours since in the actinic 'shade'. It is doing much better than when it was under the 'bright' light position, but not as nice as two days ago. That's as best as I could hope given its stress yesterday. But only an hour in the full -on light and WHAMMO! Jeese!
Anyhow, years ago (more than 10 - I think I mentioned this before) elegans were harder to kill then mushrooms. But now I seem to remember NOT seeing any purple-tipped elegans. They were only the 'green' non-purple (nor blue) tipped variety. And all pics I ever see of them (from back then or now) of those that do well are of the green, non-purple/blue tipped. Maybe others have purple-tipped doing well after many months, I just havent seen a pic of one.
Anyhow, I have a green, non-purple tipped doing really well for being formerly MAJORLY damaged and now recovering.
Sum up.. my purple-tip seems REALLY senstive to my lighting conditions. And non-purple likes moderate, non-filtered light. I think filtered would be ok with that also, though, just not actinic shade.
Any comments on the above?
