This might be a stupid question...

but what are silversides, and where do you buy them?? I hear everyone talking about feeding them to their bubble anemone, and I'd like to try it (I've just been giving mine freeze dried krill).

I assume they are some sort of fish? Can you get them like at the seafood dept of walmart?? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

You can buy them frozen from the LFS - they come in shrink wrapped packages like other frozen foods.

I feed my corals and anemone (a curlycue) fish and seafood purchased at the grocery store. I chop it up and freeze it. Very cheap. Strange looks when you ask for one shrimp and one scallop and one little piece of squid though.

The funny thing is I've seen so many different sizes of silversides. Mitch has some very small ones, I don't know what type they are. I usually get the Sally's if I can find them, and the Hikari are HUGE. Like chopping up big sardines. I don't like those but I suspect big lionfish would love them.

If you live near the ocean you can get them dirt cheap at bait shops.

I noticed you live in Mississippi. If you are near the Gulf, then take anemonebuff's advice and head for a bait shop.

You can get a whole box of Spanish Sardines or some such for like 5 bux. That should last you about a year...

This is how I feed my anemone. I give him 1/4 to 1/2 of a sardine at a time.

I feel your pain. It's hard to get stuff in Mississippi. It's a big change after living in Orlando for the last 2 years.

Carp may not appreciate that comment.

Tan,
You've got a one track mind these days...new 12 pack or something?
icon_wink.gif

Yes, I do have small ones...small and wicked powerful! My fish go crazy whenever I whip them out.

Seriously...silversides are my fish's faviorite, right after mysis. Clam is next, and at the bottom of the "desired" list is squid then krill. Same list goes for my anemones.
I've never bought from the seafood store before, though, it's all prepackaged stuff for aquaria. As soon as I get my act together, I imagine that I'll save money by buying fresh seafood.
