oops..

Of course, the carpenter kept the doors until I pay him......

I want to do a pulley system so I can have better access.

Any experience with that type of thing ?

I would like the exact measurements to a 72 gallon bowfront if anyone has them ?

just the top left and right corners to front corner of bow. and center back of tank to center of bow.

this would allow me to plot the arch of the bow and I could begin work on the hood before I order the tank.

of course if mitch is intrested I have 150 board feet of clear black walnut that I would trade for a pine hood

the largest piece measures 14 inches wide but mostly 6-8 in wide 8 ft boards. It is beautiful flawless walnut

Rich, you and I gotta talk! Black Walnut doesn't exactly grow on trees, up here, y'know!

You BET I'll build you a hood for that walnut!

Deb, Garf has a pulley system that they use, but I can't find the webpage just now, and I have some ideas that I'll talk to you about on Sunday.

Mitch......

heres where I got the walnut. I have a friend who runs his own wood shop and resells lumber to a funiture company.

He had a 15 acre tract selectively logged they only took the huge stuff that you couldnt reach around. On this tract was a black walnut that the company gave him $5000 for because it was veneer grade.

They took two huge logs off the bottom and cut the rest into 10-12 foot logs and left it for him. he resold alot of what was left to a funiture company for good money.

The funiture company was very selective. a 1 inch knot in a 10 foot board and they reject it. So I bought the rejects and cut off the end that had the knot and ended up with an 8 foot board of clear walnut

I paid him $1 a board foot for 150 feet worth because it was taking up the spot his new molding cutter was going. Good deal wouldnt you say

trouble is it is awful hard wood to work with. It dont cut like pine thats for sure. I use cherry to a dresser, a bookcase, and a set up bunkbeds for my kids, But i have been saving the walnut because it is so hard to find even here.

Rich-n-poor,

That would be 12 7/8" from back to the begining of the arch, of course measured on the molding.

From the back to the center of the arch is exactly 18"

I measured this from my AGA 72 USG Bowfront.

If you do come up with a design, I would be interested to see it if you'd be so kind. Also, are you going to suspend it? I like the pulley idea myself.

I wasnt planning on suspending the hood but rather building it so that the top piece could be opened like a conventional canopy. I was planning on using a piano type hinge to accomplish this.

My main idea is to build the hood about 10 1/2 inches high with the hood resting directly on the tank. I want to try to make the front arch out of a single piece of wood which I intend to bend to the shape of the arch.

To do this requires me to build a template of the arch I want to bend the wood into. Then soak then wood in Hot water and bend it to conform to the arch and clamp it in place for a period of time.

I have used this method before but not in a piece of wood this large. Sometimes it requires several soakings to obtain the final arch since if you bend the wood past a certain point it will snap.

I will probably use a piece of plywood with moveable dowels as a template for the arch.
