I am using this skimmer on a 40 gallon tall and have been very disappointed. I leave the cup at the lowest level and get about 1/8-1/2" of light brown watery fluid every 1 1/2 weeks. I thought this skimmer was just as good as the turbo flotor multi hang on but it doesnt even compair. I use this on my other system and in the same time get 2" of thicker black skimmate. I wish I had gone with the turbo for both systems. Does anybody think the get good skimmate from the remora pro?

It is working well on my 85 gal. system 1 tank also. Maybe a GOOD THOROUGH cleaning (no soap, just warm water)to make sure there is no mold release from manufacturing. or oils from skin and you might be in business.

I am using the org. pump. Rio 1400 I think. I did clean the skimmer and have had it up since Dec. and never got alot of foam from it?

I don't use this skimmer Ben so I can't be much help. I do use an AquaC EV-90 in my sump and I'm impressed with its design and quality build. Can you see into the reaction chamber of the Remora Pro? Are you getting large quantities of bubbles in the chamber? If so, have you switched your skimmers to see if they operate differently on your two different tanks? Are you running carbon on your 40g or using any additives that might be affecting skimming? Just my thoughts.

I used a Remora Pro on my 120 gallon (I wouldn't sugest trying it on that large of a tank - I had other means of nutrient export) and it worked fine. I nearly had to keep the cup as high as it would go to get dark dry foam.

Maybe your 40 isn't creating a large enough bioload to produce enough skimmate? I know on my new tank I have a HUGE skimmer, but before I added any livestock to the tank it didn't skim very much but after adding livestock it skims fine.

Ben, in addition to the other suggestions mentioned so far the problem may be the Rio pump. The water flow rate might be too low. These skimmers like a lot of flow for making water spray. You say you are using the original pump that came with the skimmer, but I'm not a big fan of Rio pumps. Check with the manufacturer and ask them to recommend another pump. It was a new power head that got mine running good and I'm happy with it now. Check with the manufacturer...send them an email and they will reply. I have a link if you need it.

Good luck, Steve

I agree with npaden. Most likely your bioload is too low for this skimmer. I believe your tank isn't producing enough waste for the skimmer to pick up, or you are not breaking the skimmer's operational threshold.

Swith the skimmers. Put the Remora on your Tflotor's system.

I have to throw my support for the Remora Pro into this thread. I've used it on my 75 gallon reef since I started it, and it's always performed fantastically, even with the Rio it came with. It's pulled out some nice, thick greenish-black skimmate, and I have to empty the cup about once a week.

Just out of curiosity, what pumps did y'all switch to from the original Rio it came with? My Rio has burned out and I need to replace the pump to get the Pro back on the tank.

Thanks.

Peace,

Chip

I read some past treads and John@Carline suggested the use of the mag 7/9 and said it improved the skimming alot. Also about 1 hour after I posted this tread Jason from Aqua C emailed me to help with the problem. He suggested that cleaning the spay injector would help. Well see. I am switching the skimmers now.

Ben,
Why don't you try running both skimmers on the same system at once so you can really compare them?

Howdy,

I have a remora pro on my Quarantine tank right now, which is a 20g with a lone maroon clown fish in it. It doesn't pull out alot of gunk, but what it does pull out is very thick and very dark.

I really didn't expect it to pull much out, especially with such a small tank and only one fish, but it does. I like to overfeed the fish to make sure it's getting enough nutrients while healing.

Try switching the skimmers to see if the flotor pulls any skimmate out of the tank before giving up on the remora. That tank just might not have that high a bioload.

Oh, drop me an email if you decide to sell the remora pro

I have the Urchin for my 55 and it never has produced much skimmate at all since I have had it(year). I get maybe 1/8 cup after a week. I have 3 small fish in a 55 but it has never produced much and I have it on the lowest setting.

Sally, depending on your filtration method, but 3 small fish in a 55, plus, if you don't feed much (less input), you probably won't get much of anything regardless of make of the skimmer.

I have a Remora Pro that I've used on a 29 and resides mainly on a 70. It skims great on the 70, doesn't produce much skimmate from the 29. (makes sense) Also, I think the spray injection tends to produce a more "splattered" kind of skimmate (stuck to the lid and sides more), so it may look different than what you are used to.
