I have an Oceanic 55+ reef tank with a mix of SPS, LPS, anenomoes, algae (mostly). I am using a newly bought Iwaki WMD40RLT pump for driving the skimmer and return circulation from the sump/refugium. I seem to almost out drive the overflow with a slight to medium flow through the tank (I have no idea on GPH). what would you recommend as a hang on Overflow? I have looked CPR's on the website and they look nice. Is the CS100 too much flow for a 55+?

Are you using an overflow now? I'm assuming your tank is drilled and you need additonal flow out.

I bought a CPR CS50 as recommended that particular week on the board. I had a hard time keeping it bubble free regardless of how much water I pushed through it. If I ran too little, bubbles would form in the SQUARE top and my sump pump wouldn't have enough power to suck the bubbles out. If I cranked the flow through it, I actually had more bubbles forming in the top. They would get sucked out though and returned to my tank :x . I never cleaned mine in the two years I had it, not sure how to scrub inside the enclosed part.

Look into the Lifereef overflows. They are excellent. I used the CPR overflow on my 55 and had several floods. I lost sleep using that because I never knew in the event of a power failure once the power came back on if the powerhead would restart. If the airline tubing gets clogged (frequently) it will not keep a siphon. It came with a RIO which never was reliable. I finally ditched the CPR and bought a Lifereef. It has never failed on me and now I can sleep at night.

So.... I bought a CS100 by CPR. What a pain in the arse! I spent something like 6 hours screwing with my tank setup to make sure the level holds, skimmer works, power up restart, etc.... I bought it from my LFS cause I needed an overflow box and was sick of messing with "used" or retrofit junk. It seems to be up and running well now, I have the siphon plugged into the venturi of a Maxijet1200, I am thinking about upgrading the powerhead to a stronger one. One thing for sure, the 800 gph it claims to handle is wrong, I still have my return lines cranked down to about 45 degrees (3/4" ball valve). It is much quieter than my "U" tube o/f box I had on it previously. My fingers are crossed. I will try to keep an update posted for anyone who is curious. Rich

Did anyone who had/has a CPR overflow box put a rio in the sump to draw the air for the siphon? Rich

My RIO 1700 was my sump pump for the 38 gal. I bought the venturi kit, ~$20 for it, so I could attach the itty bitty hose from the CPR overflow. I wasn't running my pump wide open. At my sump height, it could do ~500 gph. The CS50 was rated for 300 gph. I probably ran it lower than this. Before I tore this potential flood apart, I started to run the pump a little higher since I wanted to see if I could get the pump to pull all the bubbles out. Refer to my other post. I couldn't get it to work perfect. Just think what will happen when an amphipod, tunicate, algae, or other bit of detritus gets stuck in that itty bitty airhose when you're on vacation for a week.

I tried several small RIOs and maxijets as bubble pullers, I think you will need a powerhead that has a 1000 for a number. I think the destructions that come with the CPR overflows tell you what gph powerhead will be needed to keep it free of bubbles.

CPR has told me to use a Rio 600RV. That pump seems a bit small for the risk that the siphon presents. I will give a rio 800RVT a try. Rich
