I have been looking into pool pumps lately and saw a setup for a very large tank at a LFS which utilized a jacuzzi pump. I e-mailed the manufacturer to see if it was truly corrosion resistant and also, to see what kind of impeller shaft it used and to see what the interior of the pump was made of. I haven't heard back yet, but am hoping they do respond. My question is this, has anyone used these before? I know there's discussions on pool pumps themselves, and most of the references have been that they are not that reliable, but the fact that I saw one on a system in a LFS makes me wonder. This store has some great stuff and some great ideas, and also, some really dumb stuff and really dumb ideas. For instance, I have seen a lot of negative feedback on Aquamedic Ca Reactors, but that's the only brand they carry after doing "intensive research on the various brands and determining that Aquamedic is superior to all of the other brands out there", and they have a coral propagation tank set up that is very deep and has what appears to be a giant biowheel attached to it as filtration. They have this connected to 2 more propagation tanks that are very deep (over 36" I believe) and they use 150W HQIs over each tank supplemented by 9W PCs (I think). To me, these are bad ideas, and I am trying to figure out if the jacuzzi pump falls into that class, or into the brilliant class. By the way, it's the brand name jacuzzi, not just a pump for a jacuzzi.

A Jacuzzi pump was also recomended to me and the reasoning was that if it is submersed in water with all the chemical additives it must be O.K. I never tested the theory as my set up is too small and an ocean runner was submersable, quiet (within reason,) put out more than enough and was far cheaper and built specifically for running 24/7 in salt water. Is your tank large enough to warrant the use of such a high output pump? If it is you may wish to see what the public aquariums use or perhaps someone will post a brand name.

We use a jacuzzi pump at my store. (I think) We have a 10 foot sump with a 2 hp well pump sitting on a platform on top and an inline jacuzzi filter. Is that what you are talking about? It's a pretty good set up but it is very loud. We have four of these setups in our pump room and you can't hear a thing in there except for the pumps. Ocasionally the pumps need to be taken to a machine shop to have the bearings replaced or oiled (they start screaming if you don't). Let me know if you have any more questions.

Those pumps may have a good performance curve and may (I don't know) be less expensive, BUT you will pay out the nose for electricity usage.

You may want to look at Sequence pumps at www.atlantisaquatic.com or www.mdminc.com. These are very energy efficient and have great performance curves.
