I had 20 of them to start and all were doing fine at first, but after about 2 months they started dying off, about 1 per week. Only have about 5 left. At first I thought they starved to death becuase there wasn't that much algae growing in the tank. Maybe they died of old age because they were quite large right from the start. Hard to say how old they were from when they were put in the tank.
i've bought 20 or 30 as well in the past 2 years, and noticed some dying after 2 months or so as well. As soon as I got my calcium reactor though, no more deaths. As a matter of fact, i've got WAY more than that now because they keep breeding.
My crabs like to team up one individual snails if they are near the bottom. They rape and pillage the shell and usually realize the shell is to big and leave it.
If I see them on the floor of the tank I usually make sure they are near the edge so they can start climbing up the glass and eat.
I've got some that I know have to have been in my tank for at least 20 months- some possibly even 28 months. I have lost some though, and the starvation theroy listed above sounds reasonable. I have about 5-6 in a 125 gallon tank.
Guy, what did you keep your temp at when you had that turbo for ten years? I'm curious. I had better longevity with my turbos and margaritas when we used to keep our reefs in the mid 70's than I do at my current 82 degrees. I believe that these mexican turbos are Turbo fluctuosus which would come from intertidal zones in sea of cortez and similar areas which would not approximate typical indo-pacific reef habitat, am I correct?
