I had my 1 year old god-daughter's b-day party over at my duplex yesterday and my show tank is in the living room where the party spilled into. Well everything went well until I got home today after work and several fish were dead, almost everybug in my sand has surfaced and died, all corals are drooping, all my shrimp are dead, and of those that are not dead they are dying and quick. All my water parameters are absolutely perfect, my temp is 79.5 F, my salinity is 1.025, but there are hollow white floaty things on top of the water (which I believe are the culprit). I think but am not sure that one of my girlfriend's newphews put something in my tank without meaning too, but am not sure. I already did a partial water change 50 percent and it is still looking grim at best. Please anyone at all help and asap. The things on top are all uniform in shape like a miniature white clam shell that is hollow inside and is definitely not from my aquarium. Please help.

First, remove those "white, floaty things" ASAP! The water change was a good idea and you may want to change more.
Carbon and a polyfilter may help to remove more of the toxin, whatever it is. Good luck and keep us posted.

Man, I feel your pain.

Children are so innocent. They can do so much harm with out even knowing they are doing it.

I think a thread about Child proofing tanks with locked canipies and stands would be a good topic. Not sure if many go to these lengths.
I placed child locks on my stand and the top is way too high for them to get to. My new tank is built in so the only damage in the future is a scratched up front pane.

I would consider it Not only for the safety of the tank as in your case but also for the safety of the child. We can all learn from your loss.

I hope you can salvage something.

I would test for copper to be sure they did not through in a penny or something.

good luck.

Thanks Jeff and everyone else I appreciate your help and concern. I know this is going to sound bad, but before this happened I didn'teven think of what could happen to my tank let alone my dear god-daughter or her friends. Thanks for the tips and that is going to be the first thing I get tomorrow. Thanks again

Go to the feed store and buy an electric fence. Put it up around the parimeter of the tank. You might also want to pick up a cattle prod in case they get too close. Kids can be such a pain. If you don't get them trained quick you may have to sell them. The bad thing is that the pet store will only give you like 50 percent of their retail value...

Hope you get things straightened out...Sorry about the loss.

I would check for a penny too, you know what kids are like. They throw a penny into a fountain at a mall with Mom and before you know it every water filled vessel within ear shot is full of shrapnell. I would second removing the white balls, do they look like they may have been on some sort of chain, necklace perhaps?

Get a copper test kit too. You may find that if your tank has been contaminated that you will have to gash the lot, and save what you can.

I hope you get to the bottom of this, my deepest sympaty.

Lets just hope that on one of the fish has died and the overall impact was caused by a spike in the toxin levels. jeez man, i dont know what to say. Keep us posted and im sure we can be of some assistance.

mix up some fresh saltwater and put what looks best in the bucket of new water. Keep them there until you can do a 80-90% water change.
