cc swapping question

When swapping the CC for sand I know you are supposed to hang some of your used CC in panty hose to reseed your sand bed. How do the critters (worms,stars,etc).. get out of the pantyhose to the new sand bed?

I believe the purpose of using CC in the pantyhose is just to seed the new DSB with bacteria. Eventually you are going to add these creatures through trade or buy a bag of live sand. Please correct me if I am wrong.
