If your mandarin is fine, Why didn't you put it in your original post when you listed your tank inhabitants? (Like we all don't know the answer to that!!!!)

I don't ever remember my Mandarin hiding. Seems to me he was always out scavenging around the rock. Is he hiding, or is he dead? I vote for the latter.

I think I'm gonna have to chuck my vote into the "cut the kid some slack" category. So he's got a mandarin, plenty of newbies do. But not all of them are here asking questions. Granted he doesn't always follow the advice given but who does?

Well Kirtis I guess you have your answer so I won't bother with lava rock. If you are willing to put the time into making your own live rock it may look better- but it is after all your tank- so if you like the looks of it then go for it. I noticed the signature on Rich-n-poors response and have wanted to quote Hittler for awhile now. This may prove that the man (evil though he may have been) knew the masses better than Jefferson. It seems that he realized that the public was not educated nor well informed so he fixed the problem and stopped them from voting.

I have had one piece of lava rock in my tank for a year now. The only reason I bought it is because it's shaped like a donut. (Cue Homer: "Mmmmm...donuts...") It's now encrusted with coralline, zoanthids, and anthelia, and has become my favorite piece of rock in the tank. Everything really took to it, and the fish love to swim thru it.

They stack much better
than those irregular shapped rocks.

I find it hard to believe your mandarin is fine. You listed a starfish, but forget to mention a mandarin. Be a man and admit it died. There are a lot of intellectually superior reefers here who have lost one, if not more, mandarins. Just be honest. Being wrong isn't bad, just learn from it.
