<strong>What should I have in my quarantine tank? any sand or LR or just bare?

Hi Lynn,

I do not treat a QT tank as a hospital tank. A small tank and some PVC for hospitalization costs nothing in the grand scheme.

I treat a QT tank as a small version of life to come. Rock, sand, whatever. Especially since you are into the stocking stage. I am assuming you have healthy fish sources, as I did up here. More just to get them comfortable and eating.

For ease of cleanup then go with the bare tank. It would be easier to vacuum the leftover food and waste products.

I kinda agree with EmilyB here... personally I use the refugium for the quarantine tank this way the water is kept more stable and there is no need to acclimate the fish to the viewing tank.

I should mention however that I run a UV on my tank just prior to buying a new fish and for awhile after buying my new fish to hopefully keep them from getting or giving any diseases

Well, Jawbone if you put the new fish in your refugium for a quarantine tank, doesn't that flow through to your big tank? If the new fish got something wouldn't it just be carried through to your other fish? Maybe I'm not picturing this right?
Emily...should I have a QT plus a little hospital tank? I have a 20 and a 5 gallon that I could make into them. The 20 for the QT right?
thanks Lynn

I'd probably pick up a 10g for hospital, depends on your fish size. You may never need it, but it's easy to set one up quickly.

I've only needed the hospital tank maybe three times in three years and all the fish I've purchased. One of those was, of course, a tang, and it was my own fault for non-quarantine first.
I hope you fare as well.

Course, sometimes, you end up with a full house and then your QT just becomes another tank....like me right now..

Keeps my wallet in my purse now a bit more anyway.

Yes you would be correct but that is where the UV Comes in. <blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote

UV Ultra Violet Sterilizer sterilizes the water that passes through it... thereby zapping all those nasties.

Lynn,

If I'm not mistaken UV can only stop the Free Swimming Stage of Ick. All other stages aren't affected... It may kill the egg stage if the eggs pass through the UV device. But if the eggs are on the bottom, on liverock, or if the ich is already attached it won't do a thing. Only decrease the amount of free swimming ick thus help keep from getting into a full fledge epidemic. I'm not 100% on this but I think thats the case.

Also the condition of your UV makes a HUGE difference, new bulb old bulb, Flow through rates etc...

Mark,
You are correct...the uv cannot do anything about the ich on the fish. That is where the garlic comes in...oh, sorry, I think this has been hashed to death!
