Yesterday i asked what LR to get, and everyone and their sister told me to get LR from Harbor Aquatics in Indiana. I have seen the pictures and heard the comments, and i am sold. i can pick it up, but have one question -

in a new tank with fresh southdown sand, if i put this wonderful LR in the tank and watch it cycle, am i gonna kill off all the goodies that came with it? if yes, how do i start this tank correctly?

No, things will survive the cycle.

I also always recommend that if you ever order anything from Premium Aquatics, throw in a pound or two of their rock pool sludge. They scoop it right from the pool they keep their live rock in - there is all kinds of good stuff in there. And it's only a buck a pound! But it ain't pretty, so you might want to put it in your refugium/sump or in the back of your tank where no one will see it.

Good luck and welcome to the board! 8)

Huh? I think Tan said that things WILL survive the cycle. You might have missed the comma.

DrDave88:

I'll second Tan's advise. If you get good quality cured rock and your water parameters are OK, you should see very little cycling and most of the stuff/critters that hitchhiked in on the rock should be just fine.

As to how you should start the tank.....when I setup a new tank I generally give the tank a good rinsing (no cleansers!), put the dry sand in (that Southdown will work well - don't rinse it) and then fill with purified water. I make sure the temp is up where is should be and then mix the salt in the tank. I let all the pumps run for a few days to make sure all parameters are good. Now I add the cured rock and let the system sit for a month or two while keeping an eye on the parameters.

Good luck with your new setup!
