I've had amazing success with garlic treating ich. Both my puffer and hippo tang have had ich quite a few times over the past couple of years, but letting their food soak in a few drops of garlic extract before I feed them fixes the problem in a couple of days.

Adding garlic to the water does nothing. You must allow their food to soak it up, and then they actually benefit from it.

Is malachite green reef safe? It sounds scary.

oranje, if the puffer and hippo keep getting ich it doesn't sound like the garlic is really curing it very well. I think ich can be totally kept out of a tank if proper quarantine procedure is employed. I think the garlic is more like insect repellent.

To clarify, the puffer has had ich twice, and the hippo tang once. The first time the puffer had ich was because I was a newbie - I thought all I had to do was replace evaporated water and check the pH once in a while... oh how quickly I learned.

Nine months later the puffer got ich was after he got stuck on a powerhead. Grmm. He had a... large portion of his side die and peel off, which was probably how he got the infection. The wound healed now, and the ich is gone.

The hippo tang came down with it right after I put him in his current home, don't really know why. With some garlic and a few water changes, all is well again.

I know that like many "quick fixes" garlic is only a temporary solution, but I'd rather have a temporary solution to allow for more time to fix the actual problems.
