Hey there,

I've wanted a Green Torch Coral for sometime. Does anybody have any thoughts on how difficult they are to keep?

I've got about 7 different soft corals in my 40gal show. My only filtration is a skipper. I have 2x 65w MH lighting.

The tank has been set up for over 19 months now.

My water params are all looking good.
PH=8.3
Alk= 3.0
Temp: 78
Grav. 1.024

Thanks for the advice :)

My only filtration is a skipper.

Is your skipper like the one on Gilligans Island? :lol:

Jsut kidding.

I only have experience with Euphillia Diva (frogspawn) and it grows like a weed in my 75. It doubles in size every 6-8 months. Great if you into fraging, getting store credits for the frags, giving them to your fellow reefers, etc. However, if you want a low maintainance tank, then slower growing corals would be better IMHO.

Skipper?? I hate spell check! :?

Maybe you can reccomend another species that is pretty easy to maintain. My problem is that most of the corals I have are all eiter Brownish-Pink or just brown in color. I'd like to have something that's pretty easy to take care of and if all possible, farm raised... or from another reefer.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brad.

I have had good success with my green torch. have had it for 2 years and has grown alot and grown new heads. The only problems I have had were purely my fault. Shortly after buying it while attempting to break off a dead head (it came like this) I killed another head leaving it at 4 heads. New heads split and grew and then I lost another head due to a Miracle Mud dust storm. Besides those 2 things that were my fault it has grown nicely and never had a problem with it even when my clown took it up as it's home.

How long did you have the torch before you added the clown, Reefguide? what type of Clown is it. Did the head accidents come before or after the addition? I'm thinking of adding clowns, either Percs or Sebae, to my tank, with the hope of them hosting in the Torch. I want to make sure the Torch is well established first, though.

Their skeletons are very fragile, and if you just chip the edge of a head, it's doomed. I got a pretty big colony about 3 months ago, and one of the heads was damaged in transit, and died off pretty quickly (leaving poor, inexperienced me to think that the whole colony was gonna die), and then a few weeks ago, I must have accidentally chipped another head while cleaning the tank, killing another one. I chopped off these dead heads, though, and hopefully it'll grow bigger.

The clown was added maybe a year after the torch was. The torch was very stressed by the clown for about a week, then seemed to tollorate him just fine. The clown is a true perc by the way.

One accident came right when I bought the torch before the clown. The second came recently. The clown no longer lives in the torch but has moved on to my alveopora. The Alveopra did the same thing, stresssed for about a week then had no problem with it.

The torch was abandoned by the perc when I added a second perc that moved into my Alveopora and the original perc after fighting for a week with the new perc moved in to the Alveopora with her. Everyone told me that adding another clown after having one in there for a year alone would cause them to fight to the death and would NEVER spawn. I got lucky and proved them wrong !! They are happy as can be and spawning. :D

I have a head of torch coral thats been growing for about 1 year or so. It's grown like a weed and has been fragged lately. The only draw back I have had is the sweeper tenticles it sends out at night, stinging everything in a 6-8 inch radius. give it plenty of room to grow and medium light and it will do just fine....
