Im really filling my pants about this, my reef looks like its dieing. Im so concerned if it were not for the fact that moving my corals would stress them again id have done so allready. Everything is closed up and pissed off, and its been that way for a week or so now. Im going to the LFS to pick up a rescue kit:

1 polyfilter
20G RODI
1 Lucky Heather

Ive tested the water, and im not even reading trace. All other parameters are ok. BUT, ive got an evil outbreak of Bryopsys, could this be the cause of my woes, please help, reefer in distress.

Bryopsis, as painful as it is to see, can only smother your corals. If it overgrows them, it can kill. Otherwise it is pretty harmless.

im completely lost as to what the problem could be. Litterally everything is closed up, fish are fine, tests are fine, Mouse is not :x

If i get to the bottom of things ill let you know, im hoping its my carbon run out and leaching into the tank, at least it will be fixable. :?

Remember Mouse,
If your bryopsis (or it could be Derbesia) is growing well, it'll take up any compounds that you're testing for and you won't get any readings anyways.
Is your detritus accumulating or something?

Good luck!

i do have a little excess, but my cuke has been munching like a fiend recently, so i thought it was all under control. But this small bloom of Cyano's that i had has left the sandbed and covered all the rocks. Im starting to get the feeling this is all just excess nutrients and therefore i only have myself to blame. But ive not changed my habits for months, so i wonder why its blown up now. Im hoping the carbon is spent, and replaceing that with a heavy duty polyfilter may help. Thanks for the replys, i guess the Briopsys isn't to blame. :?

Mouse,

If the Cyano is giving you fits and nightmares, why not just nuke it with a dose of erythromycin? It worked great for me six months ago. My tank looks better than ever...

If you're sure your test kits are good, and you're not reading any Ammonia, Nitrates or Phosphates, it's probably not your reefkeeping habits...

Have you tested for Copper?

Maybe somebody has chucked a penny (or whatever passes for a penny in the UK) into the tank?

Morf, that stuff you mention is an antibactereal solution, i think ive heard people having good results with that before. Is this something i can get at an LFS or do i go to the chemist?

So you're buying RO/DI at the LFS. Could their membrane be shot?

I had a single patch of this get started once in some brightly illuminated green star polyps. I only got rid of it by covering it with a seashell for several weeks. The gsp can go longer without light than the alhae, apparently.

Mouse,
I got my erythromycin at the LFS...Not sure what you'd have to do in the UK...

Mitch,
It sounds to me like Mouse's cyano outbreak is smothering his corals. He doesn't have weeks or months to stop it...

I fought cyano for 6 months in my tank, got it from LFS water.
Siphoning, scraping, massive water changes twice weekly...
3 days of erythromycin ended that problem....

Despite predictions that I would get a huge algae bloom once the cyano wasn't there to take up excess nutrients, it has yet to materialize...

So, while I wouldn't necessarily use antibiotics as the first treatment, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use it again if my tank were in danger of crashing...

Dan, could be right about the RO/DI filter, my LFS sucks.

The algies not really a problem, unless it is a problem if you get my drift. Im quite happy to battle away with it, thats what its all about. Its more to do with the fact that none of my corals will open, and i thought the Briopsys im getting could be the cause. But its not grown over, just arround, but from what you guys are saying that doesn't appear to be enough.

The motor show last year set up a HUGE tank to hold two cars inside, they ran the whole thing on Polyfilters, so im hoping one might save my tank, at least untill i can get to the root of things. Ive seen some pretty dire situations come-back smelling of flowers because of Polyfilters.

Good point,
but I didn't read the problem as possibly being that serious, and I probably have a different attitude towards solving problems in my system as other people do. I would rather experiment with different circulation set-ups, lighting and detritus removal. I actually don't see cyano as that big of a problem, I see it rather as an indicator of "something" going on in my system and an oppurtunity to change tank conditions so that it will never come back on it's own.
If I used the myacin, I would find myself wondering "what was REALLY going on?", and would just be waiting for it to come back, putting me back at square one.

-I think the algae you are getting is the effect and not the cause. Your tank is rather small Mouse, why don't you use a TWP for your water?

Poly filters are great. I have kept one on hand ever since one saved me from a near crash that was cuased by a water change. I was buying my RO water from a store that charged $5/Mo. for all that you want. It was a great deal until the "water change form hell". They had changed their filters about a week before and I still had a problem. Fortunately, the only thing the died was a Xenia. The clams and corals all perked back up after a couple of days. I did a water change with store bought distilled water and latter added a poly filter. I think the poly filter saved the day!

Some one told my that RO water is not "reef safe" immediately after the filters are changed.

All of this prompted my to buy my own RO/DI. Now when I change the filter I know that it was changed! I'll let it run continuous for a day or so and then still not use it for the reef for a week. Just to be safe! I have never had any problems since.

Bryopsis actually secrete some chemical that is indeed deadly to fish as well as corals. When you try to pull it from the rocks you can actually see the stuff coming out of it and if too much gets into the water column it may end up killing your livestock. Be careful with bryo as it sucks.
Also be sure that you indeed have bryo, sometimes people confuse hair algae with bryo. Very few critters eat bryo, one of them would be E. Crispata, commonly known as Lettuce nudibranch (even though is not really a nudibranch).

Some scientist are curently working with bryopsis for cancer research and the research looks promising.

Raising alkalinity will help you get rid of bryo.

Mouse appreciates art.

We ALL want an avatar like that. (yes, the women too, even thought they don't want to admit it.)
