I would like to convert my current PC to MH at some point and I've read the heat issues but would like to hear from owners running MH. My question to all acrylic tank owners running MH......
1. What are you running?
2. How high is your canopy?
3. What is the tank temp?
4. Are you running a chiller?
5. How many fans?
6. Your climate, house temp?
I look forward to your comments, answers, and issues

Carl

4 400 watt Radiums

Lights are 8 to 10 inches above the tank but canopy is open to air and is suspended above the tank.

Tank temp is rock steady at 80 degrees.

No chiller, only a medusa temp controller attached to heaters and a large fan.

A/C unit blowing across the top of the tank and a fan blowing on the sump when the controller turns it on.

Fish room is kept at 77 degrees year around.

If your tanks Acrylic how come you manage to keep it clean all the way down to the sand? I thought you should always leave about an inch above the sand to avoid scratching the tank should something become trapped between the cleaner and the acrylic. what you doing, just being painstakingly carefull. :?

mouse,

You would have to go real close to sea the scratches, however minor they are there and yes I try to be real careful.

Thanks for the replies, anyone else?

60G acrylic tank here. I run 2 x 400W 20K Radiums over it.
My canopy is an open back design and the lamps are kept about 7" from the tanks top.
I keep tank temp at 82F.
I am not running a chiller.
During the winters i run 2 IceCap fans in the hood that blow inwards. During the summer i run an additional fan outside the tank blowing into the canopy.
The house temp is usually a few degrees cooler than what is outside. The house is not air-conditioned and the tank is located on the 2nd floor where it can get hot. I live in So. Cal.

The tank actually hit 87F the other day when i forgot to open the windows in the room and forgot to set the timer to turn the fan on before i left for work. I managed to cool it down to 82 in about 4 hours using the above mentioned fan.

127 gallon tank with 2-250 DE HQI and 84W actinic. Lights are 7-8" from the top of the tank. The two bulbs are basically over the open areas of the top of the tank, but the heat is not high enough that I would sweat it if one was over the center brace. I would probably come up another couple of more inches if one was just for peace of mind. I run a fan behind each bulb and also use a chiller. Tank temp is set at 80.
