So, what kind of shark is it? The guess I give is a "Brownbanded Bamboo Shark" (C. punctatum)... My references suggest that they'll reach just under four feet, and can grow at about 11 inches per year. Yikes!

I'd have to say, if you feel your tank might be too small for it down the road, it will be way too small for it down the road.

Just my two cents. I'm waiting for a big enough tank for a Wobbegong myself, but my 120 gallon is probably about 1500 gallons too small...

Kirtis,

I hate to say it, but you have a tendency to want things you really shouldn't get. Your 55 will never be big enough (now, get a 180 and we can start talking about some of the critters you want to keep).

cuz the fish guys will know more. people generally wouldn't keep a shark in a reef. there isn't enough room with all the LR. regardless a 55 gallon is too small for a hatching shark in the long run. although the bamboo sharks rarely swim around. they just sit in one place for the large part of the day. i've seen bamboo sharks in tanks as large as 300 gallons and they still don't utilize the space. but as they grow larger you wouldn't want them to feel cramped and stressed right?

but i was just thinking...all these people that flame others for wanting to keep large fish in minimum sized tanks probably shouldn't be so harsh. if you really want to be an environmentalist and "fish guardian" then maybe you shouldn't even keep fish in a tank in the first place.

since i keep fish i am not one to flame others. i'd rather educate politely.

I hatched my banded cat shark in a 45 gallon aquarium. I quickly transfered him (he DID have claspers) to my 125 gallon. He could have stayed in the 45 for a bit longer, but I happened to stumble on a used 125 for cheap. I'd say the shark grew to about 11-12 inches in about a period of 6 months. I've heard of a number of people keeping these sharks long-term in a 180 or so, but I can't vouch for the CAPTIVE raised size of any adults. I eventually turned my shark over to someone who a 1000 tank that was maintained by the LFS that I was part-timing at.

I will offer this advice: IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR EXCITING PREDATORY BEHAVIOR CAT SHARKS ARE NOT A GOOD CHOICE. I was ofcourse very excited when my egg hatched after babying an egg for three months. And I was thouroughly stoked getting it to eat, and watching it grow. However, the shark spent most of the day in ONE place. Lilterally. The shark never hunted. I literally had to skewer a piece of meat and put it under his nose, or very close to. I fact was that cat sharks are nocturnal, and well, I'm not. So it wasn't a good fit for me. I finally decided to let the shark go when I was forced to introduce my Blue Angel back into the tank. The angel was litterally trying to peck out the sharks eyes. A very accurate and decided peck. At this point, it was one or the other, and well.....

Do a search on "Kirtis" you will see many more posts like this. If it were someone else, I would shut up. This kid just seems to want to slowly kill animals.
