I am considering buying a Golden Dwarf Moray, Gymnothorax melatremus. I was wondering what kind of behavior did you find it to have? I have kept a zebra moray in the past with great success and was wanting to replace it with a small eel.

If it is indeed the genuine maletremus, It is (as far as I can tell) 99% reef safe. Very shy and secretive. It took mine 6 months to start seeing him out in the open, and only for brief minute or two. Obviously, I don't know what he eats but I am sure it must've dine on the ghostshrimps I stocked to my tank regularly. The only place I know of carries them occasionally is Marine Center. FFE used to claim to carry "golden dwarf moray", but end up being not the maletremus.

Danmhippo or anyone else. Were you able to keep the golden dwarf moray with cleaner shrimp? I have skunk and blood cleaners that I kept with the zebra moray with no trouble. I just want to make sure they are safe as well.

I have had one for close to 9 months and I would have to agree that they are very shy. He is in a FOWLR with a couple of skunk cleaner shrimp and he has never bothered a soul. They only get about 7-8 inches long and mine seems about as big around as maybe 2 pencils. The genuine maletremus, has blue eyes with a vertical "pupil". Really quite beautiful.

The wife and I started seeing him soon after introducing him to our tank. He has his "burrow" and will sit with just his head out in view. He will move and be sticking his head out of other places once in a while.

He eats chunks of mysid shrimp, octopus, and krill. He is occasionally picky about his menu, and might go with out anything for a few days.

Here is a link to a place that carries them. They are a bit pricey but a neat addition.
