"Reportedly"? Without monitoring the unit's performance (there's that "fanciful TDS idea") how do you know? Are silicates your only concern? The carbon and the prefilter definitely serve a purpose, but they don't remove everything.
Nothing troubling or elusive about it for people who own an inexpensive TDS meter. How do you know when your RO membrane is not working well anymore?

The functioning of an RO/DI unit has little to do with opinion. A DI unit removes contaminants that your prefilters and RO membrane won't. Don't take my word for it - do some research. Nobody is telling you that you have to use one, but the above statement is fact, not opinion.
