Read yesterday that Marinland (penguin filters etc...) will release a new bacteria product that will cycle a tank overnight. It's supposedly based on a new type of bacteria that they discovered. The product must be refrigerated until use and then the tank is cycled the next day. I'm a bit skeptical. They made no mention of saltwater tanks but they didn't specifically say "fresh" either. Any one else hear anything?

hi.
Biological weapon alert! Biological weapon alert! Where is the link?

Try not to say anything particular about the company, but are you sure it is marineland who claim this? I can't find anything on their website's press release or anywhere...

Did you get this from the very same spam message that sell Human Growth Hormone? It suppose to make my bolding head get more hair, my legs silky and smooth, grow up to 10 inch taller, loose up to 300 lb in 3 weeks, more desires, cure pedaphile priests, etc....

Seven if I'm reading you correctly, the message is "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is," right? If so I agree.

Maybe this comment could go in the Marc Weiss thread as well.

Oh, find it. The Bio-Spira, "the actual bacteria responsible for nitrification in closed aquatic systems." But wait, they say they "discovered" it ... I am not going to say anything more until I read the articles...

Minime, don't try to put words in my mouth

hi.
Can't read the articles in detail, but I did not see any claim that the product can cycle a tank overnight. Again, where is the link that make the claim, Rover? Did you hear this from your LFS? The label on the product? I bet it was a saleman (instead of a scientist) who said that...

BTW, the link to the articles is:

Article I read about it in Pet Product News says a filter can be cycled in about 7 days compared to the normal 4 weeks.

My take on it is:

A) great another stupid product geared to reward the impatience of the newbie

B) Will be fine for FW but likely rather useless for Saltwater.

C) Use of this product or something like Fritzzyme might be interesting when curing LR.

That's the article I read. I'm pretty sure it said you could put in fish as soon as the "temperture" has stabilized. It sounds pretty " fishy" to me too.

Yes, but will using this product "align the water molecules" in a lensing effect to improve light penetration?

I would have immidiately dismissed it as well. But the fact that it must kept refrigerated at all times caught my attention. Marineland isn't a small time company. They and a lot of their wholesalers (and retailers) are going to have to invest some refrigeration units just to sell the stuff. Seems like a lot of trouble for a gimmick.

From "Bio-Balance" sales brochure:

BIO-Balance is the first and only concentrate with the actual nitrifying bacteria responsible for nitrification in closed freshwater aquatic systems.

I heard that the Marineland scientist have actually isolated and patented the bacteria responsible for nitification; which from what I understand has not been done before. I agree with Rover, Marineland is no small time company, correct me if I am wrong but aren't Marineland, Perfecto, and Aquarium Systems (Instant Ocean) are all one company. I not saying this is a miracle additive, but there might be some validity to their claims.

What did they do hire Marc Weiss and his writer?

Sounds like Hoopla to me.

hi.
Most LFS have iceboxes for the frozen food anyway. Anyway, I think I just committed a patent infringement because my FS tank has the very same bacteria that the scientists "discovered."

Somedays, I am going to isolate and patent the water molecule that responsible for aquatic properties of aquaria.... maybe the NaCl and other chemical compounds that responsible for salinity, alk, pH, and other important property too. Watch out world!

Seriously, I feel that they patent the bottled-bacteria concept, not the bacteria itself. Anyone know the patent number so that I can verify this?

IANAL, but I don't believe there is any legality to this unless they actually created the strain. If it was naturally occurring, that's a no-go.

I'd also wonder about handling- Marineland may refrigerate it, the vendor may refrigerate it, but what about the wholesaler? I'd bet if it's not kept chilled throughout the handling process, it's effectiveness would be seriously reduced.

I think it's best to cycle the "old fashion way". Why waste money on this stuff?

I've done this with every one of my tanks using raw shrimp...

Actually, they are fully able to patent it if they discovered it. There are thousands upon thousands of patents on YOUR genome right now. Probably the exact same DNA sequence you've been carrying since conception. So, its not unusual to find a patent for it.

As for usage, I imagine it will work on tanks that have no 'natural filtration' such as FO tanks (fresh or marine dependant on the bacterium) that use only substrate and fake coral decorations. I imagine the concentration provided is going to be plenty for inoculating the tank.

I don't think it'd work on a live rock/live sand tank though, except to bolster populations that should already exist.

Generally, someone can obtain a patent for "isolated and purified" forms of things found in nature (eg, genes, bacterial strains). This assumes the invention meets other requirements for patentability, which I won't bother to mention here.

Only a likewise isolated and purified product could infringe the patent, so all you folks out there placidly overseeing the nitrogen cycle in your tanks are safe from claims of infringement.
