I don't get it too. I had those stand along round goniopora before and they don't last through 3 months. About a year ago, I discovered a piece of my LR has some encrusting green goniopora start growing on it! Till this date, it has already grown from 3 polyps to almost 30 polyps, maintenance schedule unchanged, except I went skimmerless about a year ago. Some said the encrusting type fares much better in home aquaria. I don't know. I don't know why the store bought ones never worked for me and the one that grew out of nowhere is thriving. :? :?:

MFisher, just because you got the one in 500 that is surviving does not make Gonipora "hardy".

The round green ones are found in muck in the wild, and your infrequent water changes and low lighting may play a factor in your success. I am glad that yours is healthy, but it still has the worst success rate of any other coral most of us have ever heard about or experienced.

They are also one of the most luminescent corals I have seen. I cannot imagine why anyone would dye a coral, they already have amazing colors that we could not have created ourselves.

The hidden reef in Philly is now stocking bright yellow dyed goni's. I saw a couple last week and saw more today. So much for them being one of the better quality stores in the area, at first I thought maybe he got them, from his supplier as a substitution, but seeing as he has more this week he must be ordering them.

Have YOU ever had a goniopora die, Reef Fever?

DamnHippo, was the encrusting goni the same color as your solitary one? My goni tends to spit off individual polyps. So far none have survived to encrust onto something, however I think it is possible. My big green one is (was) not a solitary colony, the bottom appears to have been broken off of a reef. This is the same kind that others find so hard to keep.
