both places are great to pole. I caught mostly jacks(ulua) but there are lots of smaller game like papio, goatfish, barracuda, and snapper. good in the morning!

I just got back from Oahu.
I fished pretty much every day. I fished from the shore as well.

I've gone out on boats there, but I like shore fishing because you do things at your pace. I liked fishing on the beach in front of the house with a book in one hand and a beer in the other. (The rod was between my legs)

But seriously, I fished mostly North Shore around Haleiwa and Mokuleia. Man I was nailing fish everyday! Get the circle hooks size 16 is great. They seemed too small to me, but they were getting big fish. The great thing about Hawaii is that some of the biggest fish are caught right from the shore.

I like fishing off rocks that drop off straight down instead of surf fishing. I packed a small rod in the suitcase, so I couldn't really surf fish even if I wanted. But no matter what anybody says, you can catch a big fish on a small rod! Just don't run out of line. I hooked 3 fish 20+lbs. And this is just casual fishing. I used squid, and fish from the tidepools. Just buy a $3 net from the store and net the little gobies. They call them Jumping Jacks there.

The nightmare of the trip that I don't really like to mention was when I hooked a Sea Turtle. Seriously. I was a little North of Shark's Cove fishing off some rocks just straight down about 40 feet, and I just about lost my pole because he almost pulled me in. I didn't know what it was. I thought it was a 9' shark that didn't know it was hooked. I fought it for about 35 minutes, but then I saw it come up for air and saw that it was a Green Sea Turtle. So I immediately cut the line. I was so upset. I felt very bad. It is a resident Sea Turtle that I see every year when I dive at Shark's Cove. I know it's him because I've never seen a turtle so big ever. He has an odd lookin his eyes when he looks at you. It's like he's seeing inside you.

Anyways, I'm rambling. But good luck. I loved it. Not knowing a lot of the secrets, I just threw out the line and kept my fingers crossed. But it worked. I caught fish everytime, and never caught the same type twice. Use strong line, 20lbs +.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes or if you have more questions.

catch and release 'em please

be careful not to let any unattached, stray fishing line drift into the ocean please

You'll have a blast, just pleasantly asking to keep responsibility in mind.

Hawaii is awesome. Be sure to snorkel.

That's the cool thing. You don't need a fishing license. Just try going into a sporting goods store and ask for a license. That's what I did. I got the funniest look.

right on Peter. I knew if I was careful not to be an arse about it you'd hear me right.

You obviously love wild tropical ecosystems.

If you happen to gather caulerpa, kick me down. I live in Oakland too.

Enjoy the reefs. They are magnificent there.

God Hawaii is cool.

Hey Mandarin,
I will be visting Coral Fish in Aiea. There prices are really cheap compared to here. I am thinking about picking up a Chevron there. I called them and they said Chevrons here are pretty rare and quite pricey.

I ask them how much ? they said 45$!!!! rare Black Tang 100$ Yellow Tang 7.50$ Let me know if you have something in mind. I still have to check with my airline regulations and things to see if they allow me to. Coral Fish said that they have boxes ready for customer that buy theses fishes and take back home. Comes with stryofoam and things like that. I also will be checking chinamens hat to hunt some mantises.

Yeah the telescoping rod is perfect. That's what I used as well.

About the tidepools; I mean anywhere that there's rock, like volcanic rock on the beaches, you're gonna get tidepools. Where the water collects after high tides. In the tidepools there are these 3-4" gobies that are tan-brown in color. They call them jumping jacks because they actually jump from tidepool to tidepool. They're easy to catch. But as far as live bait, there are a lot of things in the tidepools you could use. The best type of baitfish you have to actually catch with a line. You toss out a very thin 2lb test line with 10 or 20 micro hooks and catch these little fish. I can't remember what they call them, but they probably aren't even there anymore. They only come for a few weeks every year.

But really, you probably don't even need to go to all that work. I think I caught everything using squid. It will catch most everything. They sell it everywhere there. Just keep it frozen and it's real easy to cut. Just use the main body and cut about a 1/2 inch off and hook it twice on the hook and leave the hook tip showing. It won't come off the hook. Octopus also works good as bait, according to locals, but I don't know.. I couldn't bring myself to buying them and cutting them up.

About getting bites or strikes: pretty much everything that struck the line stayed on. Those circle hooks are great. They're self setting, and they just stay in the mouth! They can't shake it out. I'm going to start trying them around here.

I fished mostly in the evening before sunset, I guess 'cause I was too lazy to wake up early on vacation. But it was great. It was even good during the day. But they really seem to hit right before sunset. I cught a Yellowfin tuna and it fed us for the week. We gave a bunch away. It is so good wild-caught!

So where do you fish around here?? I'm in Fremont.

I am from Oakland.
I used to fish under the baybridge till they closed it off. Sometimes i go behind Costco in Albany for stippers. But I stopped fishing for serveral years now...something about fishing in the bay doesn`t amuse me much.

But fishing in the tropics is totally different. You don`t know what will hit, plus the fish there is a whole safer to eat then here. BTW how many lbs was the tuna ? 8O

I know what you mean about fishing in the Bay. It's not desireable at all. That's why I'm moving up north. But I think Bay fishing is more for the thrill. Of course you would never eat anything. Except possibly Striper or Salmon. But I go out to a spot accross the San Mateo Pier where we catch a ton of sharks and stingrays. It's been really good lately.

It's hard to estimate the weight of the tuna. The house we stay at is literally on the beach, so I would just fish there in front on the beach. I was amazed to catch a tuna in such shallow water. Very unusual. But I would say the length was about 30". You can imagine the fight it gave on a telescoping rod!

I just got back from Oahu. What a blast. I'm one crappy fisherman so I don't do it. However I was up on the North Shore snorkelling. As you will be up there fishing in that neighborhood I figured I would hip you to some of my favs.

If you fish past Waimea off the tidepools between 3 Tables and Sharks Cove eat at "The Hut." A literal hut just off the road across from the tide pools. I recommend the Ahi Panko with mac salad and white rice. Follow that up with some Shave Ice in Haliewa. Matsumotos always has a line but Aokis doesnt and is just as good. remember to Maximize your experience and get the ice cream and beans. Before you drive back to Waikiki or wherever youre staying thrill your hosts or yourself by picking up a Ted's haupia chocolate pie in Sunset. Additionally the pineapple flavored cotton candy at Dole will jack you up for the drive back.

Good luck fishin.
