I was in LFS just last week, and a lady was pointing some pods to her boyfriend (I think) "look at those little sea cockroaches........"

Justphish, Tell them (your customers) you can sell them another wrass as a "cockroach exterminator".

We had a wholesale customer (so that mean's it's a MANAGER OF A STORE, now) who called up all freaked out and said that a sea cucumber that we sent them had baby mantis shrimp inside of it and that it spewed them all out. (translation, there were some 'pods in the bag from the tank it was in).

People come up with some whacked out stuff on their own, then pass it along to other gullable reefkeepers. Let's hope that none of these people are mandarin owners :?

Copepods are pelagic and planktonic and don't really cling to rocks like amphipods do.

Well that is not entirely correct. They are several species of copepod that are benthic in nature. For example a lot of harpacticoid copepods are.

Without a close-up pic its hard to say WHAT these people are seeing.

Aloha!

Hey monkeyboy,

Is your avatar a picture of an arrowhead wrasse? I have a couple I just love. They hide a bit and usually have a cowered down look(bent tail) but they are cool none the less.

If they were misidentified they were only misidentified as copepods rather than amphipods if at all.

Some folks still swear that the copepods are satans spawn. No matter what I say they insist.

Oh well

Monkeyboy, that wouldn't have been managment from Green Mountain Tropical Fish by any chance  ?

Well, I can tell you that it wasn't Green Mountain, but I think it's up in that NH, VT area.

My avatar is a 2" 5 Bar wrasse aka Mystery wrasse from the Marshalls. The pick is kind of crappy being that i took the picture in a specimin container during acclimation. My personal favorite fish, although he did kill and entirely consume a cleaner shrimp in the quarantine that was a full quarter inch longer than him. 8O

But why though? Are organisms getting damaged or eaten in their tanks and they're looking for an answer? Very odd.

They say that copepods spread diease and infection and are the cause of the decline and decimation of the natural reefs. From what I am told anyway.

Copepods are one of the largest food sources for most corals found in the wild. If anything, they are responsible for nourishing corals and helping them flourish.

Delbeek, correct about the harpacticoids. I have had such a limited experience with copepods, I have forgotten about they existence of any benthics. All the researchers at our University are infatuated with Arctic pelagic types.

Copepods can be harmful yet in an indirect way - they themselves may carry parasites upon them (not that they want to) or serve as intermediate hosts.

JustPhish,

1 This ever changing (advancing) hobby isn't for the hard headed.

2. You don't need to deal with stupid people, igonrance is one thing stupidity is another. A friend of my dad's (years ago) told me that he won't do business with stupid people. He, by the way was VERY VERY successful.

Don't waste your energy on people like that it would be better to use your energy on people who you need.

LOL, thanks. Unfortunately, stupidity sometimes takes a little while to reveal itself.

Anyways, I wouldn't call these folks stupid, just mis-informed.

Copepods are obviously a very important part of the reef ecosystem. I have found that if you make sure you take care of the tiniest of creatures, the rest of the animals will do very well. In reality, copepods are no more likely to carry a parasite than the coral, fish, or live rock the customer is buying.
