I'm not sure I understand your question Enzo, what noise are you referring to?

Try making the hole a bit larger and attach a flexible tubing to it. Then close or open the flexible tubing using a pinching gizmo that fits over the flexible tubing that you turn to squeeze the flexible tubing

The problem Ihave with my standpipe is not at the top but when it drains into my sump. It is hardpiped underneath the tank from the bulkhead to the sump and I have this loud bubbling noise. It looks like there is quite a bit of air being sent down the pipe with the water and that is causing the loud bubbling noise. Is there anyway to fix this?

reefreak,
There are two things you can try, first is put a float in your overflowpipe. These floats you could buy at you fish shop as part of a kit on your predrilled tank w/built in overflow boxes. Second is raise the water level in you overflow box by raising the height of your standpipe. What this does is eliminate the water from crashing down into the overflow box, by raising the water level in the box.

I used to have some noise where the water draining reaches the sump. at the end of the flex tubing, I have a 12" length of PVC tubing with a 45 degree fitting at the end, I teied a 90 degree, but I felt like it was too sharp of an angle.... and the opening is totally submerged in the sump water, I thought at first it would cause some back pressure but for me everything is fine, and now its pretty quiet

tpro,

Actually the sound coming from the water pouring into the overflow box is a separate issue and one I plan on working out exactly how you suggested by raising the standpipe a little hiogher.

Do they sell this float you were speaking of online? I just haven't heard of anything like this, that actually fits inside the standpipe.

SeaHawkJohnny,

I iwll try this out and see if it works for me.....I hope, the wife is starting to get upset.

reefreak,
by raising the standpipe you limit the air mixing w/ the water flowing into the pipe therefore reducing the gurgling sound in the sump.

The floats don't work as well as the durso. Make sure the end of the line is submerged about 1" under the level of the water in the sump and use a angled piece as mentioned above and 90%+ of the noise should disappear.

I will be trying this tonight.

The whole reason this began was because I updated my sump and return pump. Now my pump which is a Velocity T3, is pumping way too much for my single overflow to handle. Luckily I placed a ball valve after the pump and I have had to back this off quite a bit so my tank will not over flow.

Hopefully the angled piece at the end of the standpipe will do the trick.

Thanks alot guys for all those suggestions but I still did not solve the problem the only time I came close to it is by pinching the line with a wisegrip and reducing the flow, that helped alot alot it became dead silent so I'm considering to maybe install a ball valve on the line to the sump...
any comments on this setup? Dangerous? is there any other way to get the same result without the ball valve?

Use a gate valve not a ball valve and secondly w/ the fluctuations in power and therefore water flow from the pump good luck you will flood .
