As the subject line says, I'm looking for complete, step-by-step plans for building a tank stand. This would be for an Oceanic 125 gallon RR, but any DETAILED plans for a medium/large sized tank stand would still be useful as modifying dimensions would not be too difficult to figure out.

I know there's a couple of threads in the DIY section but they are simply not specific enough to follow (i.e., not nearly enough pics or detailed instructions unless you're basically a professional carpenter).
Does anyone out there know of any good links, books, or other resources?

Welcome to the board NH3!

What kind of stand are you looking to build?

Simple frame style sructure to hold the tank or a stand that is considered a piece of furniture for your home?

I built my own stand for a 55g 2 years ago and never regreted doing it. I have attached a few photos for you to see.

If you can't find any plans that fit your need, (and you have the time) drop me a line at [email protected] and maybe I can give you a good strating point and work from there.

My stand is 3/4" oak cabinet grade plywood. smooth one side 5 ply and I used solid oak trim pieces on all corners to cover the raw ply ends. The design on the canopy IS NOT routered. It was a simple wood applique I purchsed at my local building center and then wood glued on before staining the piece. The stand was built using only 2 power tools. the first was a table saw to cut the 4x8 sheet of ply down to sizes and the second was a drill for drilling pilot holes and securing pieces with 1-1/2" screws. all other tools were simple hand tools like:
Rulers, pencils, hand saw and a cheap plastic miter box.

Ok..I lied earlier...I did give in and buy an electric palm sander to make sanding a little easier.

(funny, I forgot all about that sander and my wife just reminded me where when and why I bought it like I bought it yesterday  )

The total build cost for my stand came in under 400.00 (she says 398 and some change, didn't understand the words she mummbled between the last two numbers  ) which included the cost of under cabinet lighting for the display shelves and the mirrored back.

The wife thinks it was money well spent now that all the saw dust is gone and the house doesn't smell like wood stain.

All the best!

Hey C. Garcia,

The display shelves in the stand is what tripps ya out ain't it
No sump.

I have a 5 gallon refugium thats hang on the back and I run a back-pak 2 skimmer. other that that, there's 2 other power heads in the tank and There's a 7gal DIY water jug behind the stand for makeup water only that runs on a tsunami pressure switch.

I built the canopy with the intention of using an ATS system on the tank but can't say I have ever felt the need to invest the money for one now.

I didn't want to mess with a sump on a 55g and lets face it, to a reefer, the stand just makes the eyebrows raise when they try to figure out where all the "neccessary" equipment is hiding.

I went with a 6" DSB and about 60lbs of cured liverock at the start to handle the filtration of my reef and can honestly say that I have not ever had a problem with bio load on my system. I admit I don't have very many fish in my reef though so this helps. all told, there are only 4 fish in the reef.
1 mandarin (2 years old, plump and happy thanks)
1 six line wrasse
1 blue devil damsel (he's been in there since day 5 so its his house)
1 Percula Clown (mate died in an unfortunate attempt to leave the tank to see what the rest of the house looked like)

the tang and chromis you see in the photos were removed last year and given to a fellow reefer with a 180 g.

The poor damsel was victim to an idiot (me) who belived his LFS that told the idiot (me) the damsel was perfect for putting in a just set up tank. He lived so I let him stay and he's part of the family now. His names spike

Regards,
ty
