What kind of water do you use? R/O or D/I? I've talk to many people who use either tap water or "spring water" with conditioners added. I just started my tank and I used a D/I filter. I'm wondering if I could use water from my refrigerator water filter that filters out sediment and uses carbon and silver to "purify" the water after adding in a water conditioner (Prime).

I have to use RO/DI otherwise I get green algae blooms. I tried using DI again, and right after doing it I started getting algae again. I couldn't imagine what would happen if I used conditioned tap water. It is also used to mix my limewater.

If straight DI is giving an algea bloom, perhaps the resin is spent.
That's the only time I've seen a bloom of any sort in my tank.
I got a conductivity meter on my resin tank to let me know when it goes bad.

Can you use bottled or bulk spring water? Different people have told me different things. Some say don't use spring water because of the minerals. Others say it's better than city treated tap water. I have tested my tap water and it tested positive for ammonia. So I probably won't use tap water, although someone told me I could as long as I use a conditioner that removes ammonia, chlorine, and chloramine. What is the consensus?

Hmm..

I have been using well water which goes through a .02 Micron house filter before entering the main plumbing.

Any opinions on that?

I think some people need to "come clean" on what they use for top off water. LOL

I use RO/DI.
I understand that measuring total dissoved solids (TDS) is the way to tell how effetive the system you have works. One of my next planned purchases in this hobby. They will make a chemist out of me yet .. Never liked chemistry before now when I find myself having to understand it
