I'd like to see the following spectrum analysis:

12K SunBurst -- These bulbs have been out for a long time now and I've not seen anyone do a spectral chart.

10K Blueline -- These bulbs also have been out for a long time

10K Ushio Vs. 10K Aqualine Busche -- Someone said that the 10K AB bulb is bluer but it would be nice to see the actual difference in chart form.

Thanks!

-Nathan

The 12K sunburst and 10KK Blueline have been tested and results reported in the Marine Fish and Reef annual 2002. The spectrum on these is almost identical to the radium lamps, one big spike in the 524 nm range, with less overall PAR.

I have just finished testing the new AB lamps, and have the results for the magnetic ballasts, but waiting for AB to send me the Pulse Start ballasts that they are recommending with these lamps. I will release the results as soon as these tests are completed.

Sanjay,

You mean to tell me you can't pull one of those Diamond Light reflectors off your display tank some evening to do testing with it? :P

Ok, now we are cooking.
Sanjay, 1st, when would you need these by. 2nd, if we could only loan stuff how long could we expect to be without it?
3rd, are you looking for a diversity of ages of bulbs to evaluate performance loss over the life of the bulb?

Sanjay,
I will send you my 4 6500K Iwasaki Lamps. I think I also have a 400W magnatek ballast or 2 laying around and will check on them.

I would need these after July 10th.

I expect to be testing the last 2 weeks of July and possible Ist week of August.

I was not planning on testing lamps of different ages, as I think I will have my hands full between the combinations of various lamps, reflectors, and ballasts.

Sanjay,

In regards to the Diamond Light Lumenarc III reflector: do you need just the reflector or the reflector + morgul socket + cord for your testing? I will be purchasing one of these two options in a 250 watt model and before I use it I will forward it to you for your testing.

When you say you werent testing lamps of different ages, dos that mean you don't want the 400's I have? I don't want to clutter up your facility with unwanted mail.

Steve,

If your 400s are used then that is correct, please do not send them because Sanjay will not be doing testing used bulbs. Only new bulbs this time around.

id like to see the 400 watt 20k radium tested on all these that are supposed to work well
1 -400 watt s-51 hps
2-430 watt son agro hps
3-m-135 MH pulse start
4- e-ballast
the reflectors id like to see are
1-hydrofarm radiant
2-diamond lumen arc III
3-digital oceans (spider light)
just my input
also its been recomended that the 10k ushio will run well on the 400 watt s-51 hps id like to see it on this ballast compared to a standard m-59
dont know if it'll be brighter or just make the bulb last longer

Okay guys,

I've been in communication with a lot of you and we've got many of the products that we've been looking for. I've been on the phone with many manufacturers already and will be completing the list sometime this week in an effort to obtain the rest of the supplies directly.

We still haven't found anyone with a spare Ushio 10k 175 or 250 watt single ended bulb. These are pretty common so hopefully someone can spare one of each, I know you're out there.

Also, I am still having trouble obtaining the AB and Geismann products. If there is anyone out there that would be willing to donate one of these spendy gadgets to Sanjay, this would be greatly appreciated. In particular I'd like to ask the sponsors of Reefs.org to see if they have the resources to help us out, I know a few of you guys carry these lines.

Anyway, I'll keep you all updated. For those who don't already know why I'm posting this, its because I will be helping Sanjay with his research this summer and I'm currently responsible for obtaining the supplies.

eddie,

The Diamondlight Lumenarc III will be tested. I'm purchasing one either this week or early next week and loaning it out to Sanjay for testing.

FWIW, it looks like you have a big list of things you'd like to see tested. Maybe you could talk to Tim and see what supplies you might be able to loan out and/or purchase for Sanjay's testing. Since this is a research project, some suppliers might reduce their rates for product testing.

i posted a link to a 430 watt hps hydrofarm super grow wing system i won on ebay the other day at RC for $96 the reflector is a doulble parbabol hammer toned
i know its a nice reflector but not nice as a hydrofarm radiant
i should get the system by next week
the ballast is the same as a pfo hqi(supposedly)
i dont care to see the reflector im getting tested really
i wish i could get involved in this study
but just brought home our newborn sat . and wont be able to spare any funds for this one
but thought id give my input on the best 400 watt bulb set up's avalible anyway(imo)
also another ballast worth exploring is the new switchable hps-mh hydroponic ballasts
for those who want to run pulse start & non pulse start lamps on one ballast
why cant sanjay use one of his lumen arc's?

Sanjay: is your list current? Do you have a 150 DE 20k radium bulb? Or a 250 10k Ushio bulb? Also do you have fixtures/reflectors from GIesemann or AB yet?? Please update me as I can supply a few of the products mentioned. :D

Ok. I am back from trip and have had a chance to update my inventory list based on what came in while I was away. Here is the updated list

http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/s/b ... ntory1.htm

Also, in the last few days I have got the testing rig built and have taken a few test readings for one reflector. here is what the current test strategy looks like.

Testing grid area: 3ft X 3ft
No of test points: 169, spaced 3" apart
Test the PAR at each of these points, at 3 different distances from the lamp: 6", 9" and 12".

Based on a sample test run, each set of readings (169 points) takes about 1.5 hrs. Much more than I had anticipated !! So each reflector test takes about 4.5 hrs.

Since the reflector spread will be pretty much similar for the bulbs, my plan is to take extensive readings with the 10KK lamp, and then express these as % compared to the center point on the grid. Then take one single reading at the center point with different lamps.

More on this later, as I progress with tests.

Thanks for all your support and input.

sanjay.

Would it be possible to also test the effects of using eggcrate placed a little ways below the bulbs as well?
