I've just discovered that my percs have layed their first clutch of eggs. It doesn't seem like more than 100-200. Bu there is a bare patch in the middle of the clutch. Someone might me munchin on em !!

Besides airating the eggs mother and father both seem to be "mouthing" the eggs? What is that?

Hard to make out but here it is anyways. Most of the clutch is on the back side of the rock. Going to try to get a decent camera and a macro lens for a few better shots. Need to get on the ball and set-up a rearing tank tommorow.

Let me be the first to say congrats!!!! As far as the mouthing the eggs goes, I'm not posotive but it may be that they are moving the eggs to keep them from going bad. I know that some fresh water fish do that. I am sure that someone with more expereince with clowns will chime in soon.

Well I'm reading through my copy of Clownfish by Joyce Wilkerson witch I should have probably read earlier :) and there is a pic of a Skunk Clown doing the same. Maybe it's just part of the airating...

I can see that eyes are developing, so I hope I'm not too late in setting up my rearing tank by tommorow...

your clowns are cleaning the eggs of debris, and may also remove diseased, or infertile eggs this way.

congrats!

:) how often will they spawn that that they have begun doing the dirty?

My maroons spawn about two days after the previous clutch hatches. That puts them on about a 10-12 day cycle from laying to laying.

Anybody know of a good source for rotifers so I can try rearing some of the little buggers? And how the heck are you supposed to catch the fry if they clowns refuse to lay anywhere but on the back glass of the tank???

I have to agree with VITZ. I used to raise angels and the parents will pluck the dead eggs to prevent fungus from developing and affecting the healthy eggs. If the parents don't do a good job at this you may have to help them. Any sign of fuzz you need to remove. The dead eggs were usually easy to identify as they would become cloudy. I used to use a syringe with a piece of airline tubing attached and stiffened with a wood skewer. The wood skewer will also help in unsticking the dead eggs. You also don't want the dead eggs laying on the bottom of your tank as they will fungus up. DISCLAIMER; My experience was with freshwater marble angels and I'm not sure if marine rules would be the same. I also reduced lighting to help prevent the fungus. However, I did raise thousands of these guys and supplied the Tampa Fl. area LFS' with angels for a couple years. Hope this helps. There's my 2 cents, I'll shut up now.
