Where is the best place to place your skimmer,

-before the sump ie. in the water drained from the show tank thru the skimmer and then in to the sump for filteration.

-or in the water after it is filtered on its way back to the show tank.

Also when do you know when you need a skimmer. Are the signs too look for?

Right now i have a sump with bio-balls in it. I am thinking about incorporating a skimmer in with it. Should i be considering a refugim? I don't plan to put any corals in the tank. Just LR and fish.

Should i consider just trashing the sump and building one with out boi-balls. How big should the sump be for a 55g tank? What are the internals of a sump, MM or DSB?

For a 55, we normally use a simple 10 gallon aquarium for a sump, with skimmers/heaters/return pump in it (because of the width of most commercial stands it's tough to get anything much wider). Since space is already tight, I'd consider a hang on the back refugium like the CPR units.
