Just thought that I would update you if you haven't heard...

Iwasaki is making a new bulb. It is the 400 watt version of
the Aqua bulb. You may have seen the 150 watt version of this bulb
already.

Steve at coralreefecosystems is testing the bulbs currently.

If you would like to see some pictures, check out this link.

If it's anything like the 150 watt version, it's going to be a winner. I've been using the Iwasaki 150 watt 50K HQI for about 6 months, coupled with the Icecap electronic ballast. It's a dynamite combination and the best color I've ever seen over an aquarium. In addition, it's relatively inexpensive compared to the German bulbs.

There's a picture of one of my aquariums using this bulb in the current AA magazine (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/Scopas in Aquarium.htm)

Hey Guys,

The 150w is available in both a medium based lamp, and a DE lamp. We got one of the 400w models over here, and its in a mogul base. I'll let ya know what I think of it after we have some more run time. At this point the coloration looks pretty nice. We'll see how the animals respond.

Thanks for jumping in Perry. I didn't know the Iwasaki 150 watt 50K bulb came in a medium base. I sure like that bulb. I've been testing some of the 150 DE bulbs for Andy Howard. The Iwasaki is my favorite. Not only is the color pleasing, but the corals have responded very well to it so far. Does the 400 have a similar appearance? I'd be interested in your experience with it.

sorry to bump an old thread but... I've read some good things about this bulb. Was wondering, isn't 50k too much? Doesn't that lose the PAR value (whatever that is)?

The general rule is that most bulbs that have a higher Kelvin rating have a lesser PAR value, however this is not always the case. Read Sanjay Joshi's articles on the spectral analysis of various bulbs. You will see that some bulbs such as the Iwasaki Aqua2 175w bulb and the XM 10k 250w bulb have high peaks in the blue spectrum but still have a high par value. This is the type of bulb I look for.

Now my question is, should I go with the 150w DE or SE? Is a SE standard reflector better then a standard DE reflector? I have a standard DE and the reflector is so much smaller than a standard SE, but the light is more concentrated at one point....

Any ideas?

I would go DE. The 150 watt SE lamps are medium (not mogul) socket and there are very few lamp or pendent/reflector choices for this style. There are some excellent DE pendents/reflectors out there now and lots of lamp choices should you decide to try something else in the future.

My guess is that it's probably better, but I've never used them or tested them myself. I say better because it has the enclosed ends. Normally, the cheapo SE reflectors like the old spiders are open at the ends which allows a lot of light to escape.

I have the DE version in a PFO pendant and in a SLS pendant. Both have decent coverage :)

I just saw someone's tank that had Xe 250 watt 20k. How does this compare to the iwasaki 50k as far as blueness?
