i recently put in about 30lbs of dead base rock(tufa) in my reef tank which already had about 55# of lr in it. i was thinking, that untill the base rock became fully seeded, the detritus that settled there would not be processed. this got me to thinking, will adding dead rock cause your tank to have a spike (prob. a small one). since i realized this i have been spending a little extra time flushing the rocks out with a powerhead.

are my theories and actions correct here?

Unless it's been from a previous tank or has organic matter in it, I wouldn't worry. I added lace rock periodically to my tank and would just give it a good rinsing to loosen the dirt.

im not nessesarily speaking of the dirt and debris which comes in on the base rock, but the detritus which accumulates in it after its in the tank due to the lack of fauna to consume it, like bacteria.
thank you for the reply though, it probably isnt a concern, just a curious observation i saw.
