If overdosed, it may temporarily lower the pH, however over time, the purpose of Kalkwasser is to increase the buffering capacity of your water, resulting in an overall increase of pH.

This is just a suggestion. Invest in an Alkalinity test kit and also a Ph meter. I'm glad I did. Wouldn't want to run a reef tank without either.

PS: And do a Search for some Randy Holmes-Farley posts. He knows this stuff so well he could probably explain it to my grandmother in a way that she could understand it.

I do have a dkh test kit, and also a PH meter, and every other kit you could think of, i was just wondering what effect dripping Kalk (Reef Former) made by Natureef does to alk and ph, my mag levels are 1292, cal-400, alk a few points high and ph 8.0 at night, 79 morning, i'm trying to raise my ph to 8.3 without raising my alk, Thank you for you response.

Oh. My bad. I got the impression you were already dripping and was wondering what was going on in your tank chemistry-wise.

There are only two ways to raise pH without raising alkalinity:

1. Drive off CO2 from the tank. This method will only work if the tank has excess CO2 relative to the air in contact with it. Depending on the pH and the alkalinity, that may or may not be the case. Limewater tanks do not usually have excess CO2.

2. Switch to a higher pH alkalinity supplement. Unfortunately, if you are already using limewater, you are at the max. There is no alkalinity supplement that will have a higher impact on pH.
