I am finding the argument about more art than science true also. Every where I have read states that the Bi color angel is for advanced keepers, that they dont eat well, and are unhappy in capativity and generally waste away.

Well mine eats like crazy, swims like mad and generally even bullies the other tank inhabitants....and I am a newbie to be sure.

So what if I have a 4 inch sand bed, 30 lbs of live rock, 3 power heads, a skimmer rated for a 300 gallon tank on a 65 gallon tank, do 10 percent water changes every week, study the proper feeding/lighting regimens and am reading Fenner and Tolliver (sp)?

A newbie shouldnt be able to keep this fish alive no?

The LFS has had a beautiful PBT in a 1x1 foot holding cell for nearly a month and I nearly considered buying it tonight to rescue it into a larger tank (for later transfer to somewhere else MAYBE).

Every situation in this hobby is unique. Can pristine water quality, an ideal aquascaped tank and meticulous feeding overcome a short coming of not having quite enough room to swim?

Who knows?...wasnt that long ago scientist thought that letting fish die in a tank and then adding more fish was the key to establishing a healthy aquarium. Our "Tang" theories may not exactly turn out to be hard and fast rules either.

Well see if he lives.

No it's definitely better to leave the tangs in the ocean so they can be eaten by the locals.

This board is going down the pan people as for help with the result that the same names come on and pontificate.
GT come on the board on a very similiar thread and was ripped to shreds
when it was clear from the photos that he was able to give practical hands on advice the green eye monster came out in a few people.

:D Had a good idea how about using a swimming pool to keep a Killer whale in (I could even ask some of you chaps around to watch as the creature went mad) I understand one or two of you yanks may have tried this out ,but then again I may just keep 4 Yellow tangs in a 180 gallon tank what do you think? :?

Greg:

Thank you- from a fellow old salt.

I'll take experience over pontification any day. :)

One thing that experience has taught is that although there are very few absolutes there are an awful lot of extreme likelihoods. Thanks again.

Naesco I to would like to hear about your tank. I think this is the only forum in the world that has a argument on tangs once a week

BTW I love the scopas Greg. Were can I see some pics of your 500?

That is a neat Scopas tang Reefann. I set up a tank specifically for it because I didn't want to risk adding it to the existing population of tangs in my 500 gallon reef aquarium (see pic below). If you look around you'll find pictures of my aquariums in Reef Aquarium Vol 2, in two of the Nielsen/Fossa books, and in some articles online and in print from Fancy Publications.

BTW, you all might be interested to know that Microcosm is publishing a book (at the printer's now) by Mike Paletta that features reef aquariums around the world with details on the setup and water parameters. It's sort of like the saltwater version of the Amano books. I think it's a very good idea and I'm looking forward to it.

Greg,

Does it look anthing like this?

Mitch,

Is that the picture you took when you visited? That's actually the aquarium after I thinned out the right-hand side. I've done the same to the middle now. The tangs needed more room to swim :) For real!

Greg,

I believe it was taken in April 2002. Great tank. I just wanted Garry to see what a tank that has stood the test of time looks like.

Cheers
