Has anyone ever owned a Pavona Cactus?
I looked at the pics on "etropicals" and I think I like the looks of them.
The only problem is I have never heard of them. I did a search for them on the BB and came up with nothing.
Does anyone have any info on these guys?
It appears to be an SPS.

I keep p.varians rather than p.cactus. They are the easist of the sps ti keep in my opinion. Very hardy compared to other sps. Pretty fast growers. Appreciate a lot of light and water movement but they can get adapt to moderate amounts also IME.

It's the only sps that I have ever been able to feed. I have seen it capture live pods. I touch very small pieces of seafood which stick to the "leaves". I assume is is eating it as it has grown well and is healthy. Random currents are important IMO.

Dewman,
I have a Pavona Cactus that I got in January as a frag trade. I love it, grows fast, likes current and light. No special care, eats out of the water column, Dt's, golden pearls, etc. Very unique looking coral.

How big is yours?
I wonder why I don't see more of them if they are relatively easy to keep (for sps) ?

My Cyano problem is almost gone. I want to start thinking about what I am going to add back to my tank

When I got my Pavona this last winter it was the size of my little finger nail. It has grown to the size of a baseball. I don't know why it is not found at the LFS. I have never seen one locally. I got lucky on one of our meetings and a Dr wanted to trade for a frag of mine, so I got the Pavona.

Don't know if I am able to post a pic as I don't have a websight built yet.
Just went in and took a quick pic of it so is not the greatest.

I have 2 types of pavona species growing in my 180. This is a wonderful sps coral and I don't know either why some do not like it. I have the "chip" pavona and the decussata. I got my first pavona as a Christmas present my first year keeping sps corals 4 years ago. After some trials and tribulations I still have a nice big piece and recently got a great frag of the chip pavona. This one is so cool. They seem to like my 250w 65k iwasaki's and I have alternating current and feed the tank 2 times weekly.

Sue, I agree with Vitz... I'm green with envy.

I guess I thought that this stuff was as big as your open hand. i didn't realize that it was so small. I have seen some sps that looks like an elephants ear on edge. I thought this was the stuff. It usually leaves sheets of skeleton behind when it dies.
Is this, perhaps, the same stuff in older, more mature form?

Pavona cactus is a very easy to keep SPS. It wil do well in moderate to bright light and moderate to high water movement. I got a figer nail size frag from James Wiseman back in 2000 sometime. it is now cover an area of 6X8 inches. It is avery aggressive coral and will kill everything it touches.

One reason you will not find it too often at any stores is that it is very fragile to ship. The leaves break off very easily. So this is why it makes it easy to frag, but hard to ship.

Mine grows really fast and is the browm chip type. I am looking for the green chip type.

That's what I was wondering, thanks Sue.

I would love to have some green chip as well, but I don't have anything to trade with anyone yet.

Some day though :)
