I received 2 flame scallops with my clean-up crew order. What do they eat? ... and how in the heck do they move around the tank??? I thought that they just sit in one spot and look nice. They even climbed up on my live rock. I'm puzzled. :?
Just to let you know, they have a dismal survival record in captivity. Look up threads for flame scallops, and you'll see what I mean. They're basically destined to die in an aquariust's tank in about 6 months.
Wetpetman called the lfs or online store and demand that you be allowed to return the scallops for a full refund.
Also name the store where you purchased it so that we all know.
look down the page more you will see two topics for this subject same title and everything its just a little lower on the page with 10 responses right now.
Amazing that your able to contradict the experts. However, I would never suggest a new arrival to reefkeeping tries to keep these in any way. That would be akin to telling a newcomer to FOWLR keeping that they can easily keep a Regal Angel, which is well known for difficulty.
i could care less what the experts say, what is written in those books are a general guide and are vauge. every animal is different and if youre willing to put fourth some effort on a single animal and find out what it like specifically and not what some book says, you can keep almost anything.
Please read the Advanced Aquarist article written by Dr. Rob Toonen. Not only is he an "expert" but he is also a reefkeeper and a damn nice guy to boot.
thats fine and all but i dont care if a creature has a short life span so do octopusses and cuddle fish and jelly fish as well as numerous other creatures, if i can keep one alive for its normal life span even if its only a few months i still feel like i accomplished something.
Don't let the negative posts about survival get you down. The more experience we can share about keeping these animals leads to better care and increased survival rates. This is the only way we can learn about these wonderful animals. Let me know how things turn out.........like is it still alive......since you posted?
Bangbang, all these negative posts are interesting! I didn't know that I would open up a can of worms by asking a simple question . These flame scallops are pretty cool.
Thanks to all the above posts, I'm now able to take care of them better than I was before. Maybe they do have a short life span, and they are specific eaters, but with experience comes knowledge. If we can share our experiences with these things, in the future maybe we will be able to keep these things in our tanks for 5, 10 or maybe 15 years!
By the way, is it just as cold in Walled Lake as it is here? Gotta love winter! I was just in your area a couple weeks ago. I heard of a guy that was selling his 190 gal tank. I bought a bunch of corals and a Blond Naso Tang from him.
