Yesterday, my BTAs passed on from the food poisoning from the frozen food I fed them a month ago. It was a very slow ending. The third, and smallest BTA, is barely holding on. Everything but my xenia looks good. The xenia didn't take the anemone meltdown too well. Hopefully they will recover over the next few days. The large water change should help. It is amazing that after hiding for three weeks that the anemones melted down in one day(and of course I was at work for the major part of the melt down.

Well, wish me luck with the last one. It is struggling. And also be careful of your frozen foods.

?

What happened? Was it something specific with the frozen food, or are you saying frozen food in general is bad for an anemone?

That's too bad that happened, losing something like that is always a major setback. Hopefully your Xenia make a comeback.

After feeding two of my three anemones a new batch of frozen krill they spit everything up. Which never happened before. My tank parameters have been steady and constant for the last two years(since I moved the tank). After the vomitting the two BTAs retreated under the rock they were attached to. I left them alone thinking that they were going to split again. Well, after a week of hiding I became suspicious. It wasn't until the other night(while I was at work, I work nights) that they both melted down. I immediately removed the stenching carcasses. This caused an ammonia and diatom outbreak. Thankfully I was off the next day and I was able to do about a 50% waterchange. The next day I lost half my xenia and the third anemone. Everything else survived fine. Immediately after the waterchange the snails went back to normal. Being I did not change anything(temp, parameters, lighting,or supplements) it is the only thing I can single out. Possibly the krill was defrosted and refrozen?

After realizing that this may be the cause I took a wiff of some defrosted krill and I noticed it did have a foul smell. Plus, the only specimens effected were the anemones that were fed krill. It is the only thing I can think of. So, now I am going to wait until I get my new tank before I get a rose anemone.

In no way am I suggesting that all frozen food is bad. However, I am saying that you should be aware that they can be bad or contain toxins. Before feeding take a good wiff(I had/have a bad cold and I can't smell anything. So I suggest you get someone else to sniff it for you. My wife loves me sooo much more now) and look for foriegn matter mixed in.
