Here's pics from my nano:

More pics and info can be found at:

P.S. I know a E.quadricolor and a S.gigantea in the same tank (let alone a nano) is a bad idea, but i couldn't resist the red carpet anemone for it's color and price. When it grows too large - shouldn't take more then a year - I will have another tank dedicated to it.

Hi Leonard,

Nice work. I am thinking about setting up a 10gal reef also and I have couple question for you.

How do you control the on/off the heater and the cooler?

Do you plan to add a protein skimmer to it?

Thanks.

Like most heaters, the Tetratec heater has it's own controller. I was planning on using a Ranco controller to control the temp, but found that the chiller pretty much stays on all the time while the lights are on. So I just connected the chiller to the timer and never installed the Ranco.

I was planning on a skimmer initially, but couldn't fit one in the PF150 after I installed the chiller (should've done it differently, but no big deal). Now I'm forced to do 50% water changes every 2 weeks, sometimes more often. Being a 10 gallon, water changes are a snap.

They are both beauties Leonard. I am on the search for a red carpet to convert my 40g reef into a dedicated carpet tank. I am also planning on building a new hood for my nano and adding some more intensive lighting, then, if and when my rose splits I may put a clone in the nano. What kind of lighting do you have over the nano? Where did you find the red carpet, lfs or mail order?

Leonard,

Where did you acquire your rose BTA? Any idea on sex? My female clones have spawned, so I'm always on the lookout for a male clone.

Good looking tank.

slojmn1,

I got the red carpet locally. If I find another, I will let you know. Places like cquarium sell them for $200-300, and I can get you one for about half that price, although they tend to be on the smaller side.

<edit>I no longer have access to these anemones</edit>

For the matter, if anyone is interested in exotic anemones, give me an email and I'll keep an eye out for you. I seem to be able to locate them with some frequency nowadays (but don't know how long it'll last).

Kevin,

I got the anemone from Maximus. I'm not sure if it's a male or female, since I got it 2 months ago as a 2" specimen. If it turns out to be a male, I will let you know ASAP and perhaps we can do a clone swap. My anemones all reguarly spawned in the past, so I'm fairly confident the BTA will as well within a year.

Great! Since we're local, there wouldn't be any shipping involved. I hope you have a male....

Leonard, YGM :D , ditto to what Casey said!!!!

I got a beautiful rose from maximus in early April. It is so incredible. It has definately grown and I continue to feed it every other day. I am hoping for a split in a few months, maybe even multiple clones over time. It seems very healthy and happy, it has stayed put for the past 2 months.

That's the problem, you have to wait until it spawns. And since not many folks have had their's spawn, finding people who know their anemone's sex is difficult.

Brian:
I got mine for a smidgen under $100 each. You can occasionally find Helfrichis for $100-150. Expensive little suckers, but not nearly as bad as some of my others.

Emily:
I poked around down there, but couldn't find anything conclusive :D Like Kevin said, you need to wait until they spawn to find out what sex an anemone is.

And I lucked out with my camera (old fuji mx1700z). It's a bit grainy and isn't all that resolved or advanced, but it's as good as a point and shoot camera as I've had the pleasure of using. I have a Fuji S1Pro dSLR coming my way next week, and I should have some spectacular shots once I figure out how to use it.

If I had $150 to throw away on ONE fish, fish would proably be the last thing I'd spend it on. To each his own.

Don't you want to cry when one of them dies?

How do you convince your wife?

My bubbletips did spawn, both the clones downstairs and the new little adoptee upstairs. Would one be able to tell eggs from sperm :? Or do things happen differently somehow.......

It's easy to tell - both spawns turn the water milky white, but with females you get eggs, lots and lots of eggs (I had literally thousands) - about 1mm in size, green to grey in color. Here's a pic of some eggs:

In this pic you can see eggs still inside the anemone - an anemone that had managed to wrap itself around a Fluval intake "J" tube (don't worry, the anemone recovered quite nicely):
