The ASO valve is a 3 port device (some are 4 ports) that sense the pressure on one port, and if the pressure is above a certain level, say 40 psi for most pressure tank, it will disconnect the two ports so that no water goes to the membrane housing.

For a properly working ASO valve, no waste water will come out of the unit.

oh, two of the ports (controlling port) is between the carbon filter and the RO membrane. The other two(or 1) port (sensing port) is between the RO output (not the brine, but the permeanate) and the DI/faucet.
