I have recently purchased a trumpet coral for my reef aquarium. When I first introduced the coral to my tank it expanded just as it did at my LFS two days ago, however, I noticed that its tissue appeared shrunken and little pieces of its skeleton appeared to be poking through. Is this new growth or is the coral dieing? It is currently housed directly under a 400 watt MH with a 7 hr. photoperiod. I covered the top of the tank (only the portion directly over the trumpet) with wax paper to lessen the light intensity, so the coral could adjust to the light. :?:

Many possibilities exist. Do you have other LPS (large polyped stony) corals in your tank, and are they all doing fine? If that's the case, it likely suggests your new Trumpet just hasn't adjusted to the intense lights. Mine would not open under 400W MH for a few days after introduction, but when I moved it to a shaded area, it ballooned up like there was no tomorrow. I would give it some time. Also, sometimes trumpet corals take some time to adjust to new conditions. During this time, they may remain contracted, and may even recede. But once acclimated, they'll recover with fervor.

My experience has been similar with Len's account. After purchasing mine it stayed relatively closed for over a week or two, and very very slowly started opening back up thereafter. Don't worry about it...if there's nothing aggravating it, it should be alright. Oh, and those little pieces poking out should slowly develop into new polyps.

Trumpet corals do not like bright direct light. Try shading it so it gets indirect light. Probably do much better.

HTH and good luck.
