Snails are stupid. I swear, mine love the glass more than the rock. They are fatties and what kind they are I don't know. Turbo? I have always just bought the ones that are always in the store.

"Can I get three snails?", thats pretty much how it goes for me.

Astrea snails are smaller and more cone shaped. turbo snails are usually larger and have more swirled shells with ridges on them. Go to any of the websites that sell livestock and they should have pictures.

My Astreas like both the glass and rock, wherever the algae is!

None of these snails will "avoid the rock" and strictly clean the glass, remember, there's no tank walls in the ocean! These critter's aren't god's gift to reef tanks (well, actually i guess they are...). That said, i'd recommend a mix of whatever your dealer has. Each kind of snail works at different paces and a good mix will help keep everything a little cleaner. IMO trochus grazers are the best.

adding algae food(in the form of extra animals, like snails) may not be the best way to go.

the lights are not the cause of your increased algae growth-rather, they are helping the algae to better utilize the growth factors already present in your tank(like PO4).(though cutting back the photoperiod may be a good idea to help you with a temporary fix)

just some food for thought
