i have some pieces of old live rock that has been stored in the closet for some years now. i was just wonderin if i cleaned it off first and put it back into my system, would it cause any problems. just wondering if maybe there could be some stuff that i can't see that would cause a spike in ammonia or something. nothing's on the rock, just a little salt creep. would like to bring this rock back from the dead. any info would be appreciated.

It may have dried organic matter on/in it that once hydrated, could further decay and cause fouling. I would soak it in a seperate container for several weeks, and give it a good scrubbing and blasting with clean water.

After 2-3 weeks you should have a noticable smell if there is going to be one, and ammonia if anything is decaying. I would be more worried about household contamination from dust, etc. Soak it seperate of your display.
