I have the fish for a week and it is just picking at the rocks. Have any idea what they like to eat? The fish is about 2.5 inches long. I have tried brine shrimp but no luck.
Live or frozen brine? If it won't take live brine, we may be in trouble. I don't have experience firsthand with the beauty, but any carnivore that wouldn't eat a live brine shrimp is not gonna be easy.
Kitta- don't worry! if it's picking and grazing you're prob'ly a.o.k.
be patient- i had a coral beauty for years, and he pecked for about 3 weeks before accepting prepared foods.
a good number of people(customers) i've talked to seem to have the same experience, in fact that was the one of the criteria i used to judge if it was suitable for sale.all of the coral beauty's i've seen pecking about in the store's tanks that were purchased into healthy tanks ate eventually.i'm willing to bet that you're not seeing the fish lose weight (body mass).if it's not getting thin, is alert, and appears to otherwise be o.k., then it's finding enough in the tank to be happy, and once they need to get more foodstuffs, they usually(my own experience) are not that picky.
just don't fall into the trap of overfeeding the tank in an effort to get him to eat-i know the antsy feeling of worry involved, but try to be as patient as you can-the fish may also never accept prepared food, but as long as the tank provides enough-you're still o.k.
(try the spirulina base flakes by o.s.i.)
My Coral Beauty did not eat for about 2 weeks. It would not even accept live brine. The fish still will not eat some frozen brine, it just spits them back out. But it will eat anything else, Formula One is its favorite. The fish will also eat Formula Two and Flake and Blood Worms. I was worried at first, but now this is the least picky fish I have.
My centropyge (a Potters) favors herbivore-oriented prepared food to supplement his rock grazing. Nori sheets are preferred, followed by formula 2 and OSI spirulina flakes. Doesn't take frozen brine either.
Hello,
I too have a Coral Beauty. It loves to pick at the liverock, corals or whatever! If it's picking at stuff, it's happy
Despite problems some have encountered with this species, I have been very fortunate to have received a "well behaved centropyge". Nonetheless, I will keep an eye on him!
BTW, I feed mine Formula Reef, without the gel binder.
