-Someone who claims to have this many fish in this size reef tank needs to show some proof IMO, I have so far seen none. Even if some pictures are posted dizzy, this will tell me nothing as to the age of the tank, or how many deaths that Gary experiences on a regular basis. If what Gary says is true, then why do you suppose I have never seen another successful tank of this size, with this bioload, posted on any of the reef boards???

I think some of you might owe Garry an apology. Please try and take the time to find out a little about someone before you judge them, and I think a less confrontational message board will result.

-No one owes anyone an apology dizzy. If you come on a board that is made up of experienced reefkeepers and make such claims as Gary has, then you had better be ready to hear alot of questions as to your validity.
Gary's first post was confrontational my friend, go back and read it.

Ernie makes some good points about the BSers, but some people like to attack just a bit too much. I sort of felt like I got flamed on one of my first posts and I still look for chances to repay the favor. I think we should treat people the way we want them to treat us.

This logic you use is very confusing. In one sentence you speak of vengeance, and in the very next sentence you seem to be emplying that we should treat each other the way we would want to be treated ourselves. Do you think anyone would like to be treated with vengence dizzy??? Or is vengence ok as long as you find justification for it?

I think it is human nature to want to repay those who belittle you. If your willing to give them out, you better be able to take them in return my friend.

Like I said, I have looked and searched on-line, and if it is available in the US then it at least is difficult to come by here in my area. I have never seen the publication personally and cannot find a URL for the magazine.

We used to sell a few copies here at Fishey Business some years ago. I think we got them through Publishing Concepts. I think MFM went under so I don't know if they are available any more.

-Uh, yes I was the guy, and it was done (believe it or not) to try and avoid a flame war resulting from his first post. Anyone who read that post would know that this was going to get heated, I was trying to help avoid people getting to worked up by suggesting he was a troll. Coming on this board and saying that all the talk about keeping MI's is imposible is a load of crap is definately going to heat things up. Following that with I have had them for 9 months along with all of the other fish mentioned, is well, going to raise some real doubts about your valdity.

I can't help but wonder how many people you have helped to turn away from this board. Garry was a fairly obvious newbie to this forum as his post count showed. Instead of calling him names that suggest he was a stupid troublemaker, why didn't you feel him out in a polite friendly manner? Steve it wouldn't hurt you to be a little nicer to people. You might even end up liking yourself better.

I was not "put off" that Gary has healthy Moorish Idols (Zanclus cornutus). I think that is great. I just did not like his strong reply of "load of crap". It is the same attitude of people that could build a house out of Goniopora skeletons that they have killed. I am not trying to tar and feather Gary......it is just that our ailing hobby has no room for that type of "look what I did against all advice" attitude. I respect dizzy's last post. Getting an odd Moorish Idol from time to time for a trusted and sufficiently advanced hobbyist is not going to kill thousands of fish while giving the chance for someone to unluck the mystery of such a beautiful fish.

The other has info available on the web, but not their own web site apparently. At least one of them does have subscription rates for outside the UK.

Welcome Garry. As one of the fellows pointed out, you have to be thick skinned if your going to be on an Internet newsgroup.

We tend to forget that not everyone thinks and speaks in American English. Things said or typed can carry different meanings in other forms of English.

I think a lot of this started by misinterpreting what people are saying. I think it is sometimes hard for a new person to understand how the game is played. I know it was for me. If Garry is keeping all those fish together he must be doing something right. According to my math he has something like 650-gallons of water in his system. I don't know Garry but I am interested in reading his articles.

Steve let's try and get along better. You give a lot of good sound advise. You like to challenge people, but that's ok with me. I'm all for calling out the BSers, but I just don't think we should rush to judgement in all situations.

I wish I could take back the tar and feather statement. I had just read the thread about the granny who was looking for the Liquid Gold and the reefs.org gang was looking like a hard bunch.

gary, what else do feed your MIs to supplement what they graze from the LR?? Sounds like a huge amount of LR is the way to keep them. How large are they also?? I would wait another year to say they're easy to keep, however. A nutritional deficiency from an unnatural diet can take a very long time to show itself and kill a fish. I'm sure you know this with the experience you say you have though. Any other pertinent info on your tank would be appreciated by people attempting to keep this fish.

You can see my tank following my signature. I am proud of my tank 8) . I do have a handful of marine fishes spawned in my tank.
I also feed my tangs and angels three varieties of dried seaweeds I got from the Oriental store.
I do have vibrant color healthy fishes, corals, and clams in my tank.

Dizzy your first post indicated that you wanted to stay away from this thread but you bailed in anyway.
For reasons I cannot understand you than atttack 'the tang police' (even though this is not a tang thread) and most recently SPC who is one of the most respected members of our board.
You certainly owe him an apology and in the future if you can't say anything else don't say anything at all.

Ok guys. We get the point. I'm sure all guilty parties have dropped it by now.


I do want to point out that some recent work has shown that many acanthurids live well in to their 50's and 60's in the wild. Keeping one alive for nine months may be better than the rest of the reef keepers out there, but could potentially be a blink of an eye in the natural lifespan of a fish. I personally don't think this justifies the term "easy to keep".

Now, if you can keep one alive for 40 years, I think you can chalk that one up as a success.


I mean, think about it this way. The lifespan of a human is about 60+ years worldwide. If you can keep a baby alive til it is 9 months old, I don't think that is very much of a success.

dizzy the calculations for my tank as follows in english gals because the may be a differance....tank aprox 464.75 sump 140 galls which is a dry figure of 604 gals dry! with rock displacement still probally 530ish or just under+ the skimmer holds 10 gals 5000twin,+ 4 pod TMC u/v steriliser about 5 gals it's all xtra water. iwill be opening a new thread tonight about my tank with some picy's ...GT s.wales ithought this was all about moorish idols where did i go wrong! as they say in llandow chow for now
