Garry the tank is stunning. I saw both articles in the magasines before the pictures were posted so I realied u were for real.

I hope my wee (by comparison) tank looks as good. Although for what its worth i dont like MI's very much :(

For some reason I prefer the Wimples. I was diving last year in the Red Sea and a schoal of about 200 long Nose Bannersfish (wimples to me) came past and mingled around me. I will post a picture it was unreal, although I was wondering what (predator) caused them to swim up the reef and mingle around me???.

Excellent

Hello Reef Ann

No hassle at all from any of the tangs apart from one new introduction - a Clown Tang. Which although being a juv he is still very aggressive.

Additives - Mmmm... a can of worms.

Iodine - I run my tank approx 8ppm using 25grms of potassium iodide mixed with 500mls of R.O. water dosed at 0.8ml a day.

Strontium - Levels run at 13ppm which is achieved by mixing 10grms of purest lab grade strontium chloride to 100ml R.O. water which is then dosed at around 6ml a day.

Magnesium - Often overlooked by reef keepers but really is a vital key in the calcium plan. My level is 1520ppm which is achieved by regular fortnightly 90 gallon water changes using reef crystals and I also have 3 inches of dolomite in my sump and magnesium chips from Germany in my calcium reactor which slowly disolve with the calcium carbonate.

Lastly, but not the least important Kalkwasser - which replaces all my evap water. Apart from that no additives at all go into my tank other than the aforementioned water changes.

If this is the case perhaps we should pass a law that requires all LFS owners such as yourself to take an ethics course.

Man thats out there. I agree that more education is needed, but that is too much.

As for the "endangered" label, moorish idols are far from endangered. They are not even threatened.

Here are some interesting links:

I believe in responsible reefkeeping. I believe that LFSs should be educated. I don't think that it is a good idea to mandate ethics classes because simply put I think that they don't work and that it is a rights/freedoms issue. (I don't think they work even in Canada ;))

As for this particular fish- My opinion is that it should be left to the experts. Once we know more about its care then it could be kept by more aquarists.

that link states that they are becoming rarer and rarer.

however i agree, canadians are asses just like everyone else <shoots a rare pink-stomached orange-caped gopher>

My point is that they are far from endangered. As for canadians, that was meant as a light-hearted jab at my friends from across the border. In truth, aside from the politics, Canada is one of my favorite places I travel to and this is in large part due to the hospitality and friendliness of the Canadians.

Is this a joke? Have you read the entire thread?

How big is your tank? I doubt that you will get many favorable responses on this board unless your tank is bigger than Garry's.

sorry guys that came out totally wrong. i am canadian, and that was just a joke. as a poli sci student i should know better than that though

sorry if anyone took offense :(

i'm sure that there's an official paper from some environmental organization out there on the numbers of moorish idols left around. i agree that they probably aren't all that rare. i simply hope that we are not affecting them to the point that the wild populations cannot sustain themselves.

i don't think that person was joking about putting an idol in with those tangs. for their information, regardless of whether they do or not, it would be wise to research the fish further. wimplefish/bannerfish/poor mans moorish idol are related to the butterfly family, and are Heniochus (i've commented on this in your other thread). moorish idols are the only fish in their group (dunno what that group is called specifically), and are more closely related to surgeonfishes (as i recall) than bannerfishes. please read up on whatever species you decide to get or not to get.

TEEVE you are right they are a relative of the surgeon fish, but have nothing at all to do with butterflys!
I hope carol reef is joking? 4 tangs aint so bad but idols as well? you see how easy it is for a newbie to mistake a heniochiuos bannerfish for a moorish idol.

Hey GT, greetings from across the pond and congrats on your tank. Looks great and I think I've discovered your secret for keeping the MI's happy. It's the lighted snowman that has them captivated and happy! 8O But in all truth, it does look great and look forward to more input from you in the future.
